Disc Proportioning Valve
« on: December 07, 2014, 03:09:26 PM »
I noticed these castings are different on these 2 proportioning valves. Is one type early, and one type later production, and are the internals identical?
The bottom example is known to be removed from a low mileage '66 k-code coupe and appears to have been painted grey originally.
The origin of the upper valve is unknown, but is from a Mustang.
The seal kit available from Drake doesn't have the correct size seals for the upper valve. .http://www.drakeautomotivegroup.com/Store/Product/C5ZZ-2B091-K.aspx?wid=141

Not sure if the seal kit will fit the '66 prop. valve till I get it taken apart.

Mine from 66 Metuchen car. Just rebuilt, was black (and rust), now just black.

I believe the top valve might be from a Corvette, they were also using KH prop valves. Never seen them side by side but thought I read somewhere that the vet didn't have a machined end near the cap with the date stamp. The vet also didn't have a date stamp and one of the seals inside wasn't the same either.

Thanks for the info. The '66 is from a San Jose car.
I see your valve has a brass lock nut.

Here's the thread about corvettes

http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c1-and-c2-corvettes/1673636-j-56-kelsey-hayes-proportioning-valve.html

The nut on mine is plated steel. Camera in phone makes it look like brass.

What's the build date of the K it came from?

There are two different types of valves for Mustangs, A and B. The size of one of the
O-rings is different so I buy both types from NPD and use the one fitting on the
valve I am working on.

I am rebuilding mine now as we speak. There is a really good site that shows the differences between the early and late valve.

Check it out http://www.stangerssite.com/brakevalve.html

Here is a picture of the insides of mine.

Good Luck.

Interesting reading between the Corvette Forum an the Stangerssite.  I have two of these valves one is, I presume, OE to the car and the other rescued from a swap meet.  Both have the ' A '  piston with the purple outer sleeve, both have the machined/grooved end and both have date stamps on the removable butt plate.  One date stamp is 327 4 and the other 329 4.  Brian

Not mine, saw this service replacement on ebay tonight. Top edge appears flat compared to originals I've seen. Date code looks like it starts with a 7?

Looks like when they restored the valve they remachined the top surface and cut off enough to make the top surface an oval - without the two (for lack of a better term) V's we often see. Can't seem to make out the PAT on the side facing the camera. Might just be the glare off what appears to be a fresh paint job

Guess I should learn to read not just look at pictures :o

"The number on the end cap is 1402"

Also didn't read that it was sleeved, rebuilt, painted and as you point out, probably machined. A stretch for NOS

Can anyone confirm whether the paint daub in the pic attached is factory correct?
More interested in San Jose examples.

What year car do you have?

IMHO I wouldn't use that mark at this time or suggest it on a 65 or 66 Mustang
