negative and positve battery cables
« on: April 06, 2010, 10:26:43 PM »
I am curious about the positive starter cable routing on a june 1964 mustang. The wiring schematics place it along the pass side shock tower then dropping down to the starter. On the MCA rules it mentions that the 64.5 negative cable must have the correct hold down. Does anyone have a pic of this? Where does the engine side of the negative cable mount and how does it mount to the block?

Here's a pic of an original clamp that I restored a while back:

This was only for generator-equipped V8 cars.

Can you take another picture of the area zoomed out a bit? So I can see where the attachment point is?

That edge is the battery tray.

The pic was taken probably 10+ years ago.  It is a car I helped a friend restore.

Charles-
Is that clamp reproduced? I don't believe my coupe had one, at least not by the time I got it !

Yes, believe so.  They were listed on ebay.

how about the routing for the starter cable?

Starter cable should route like any other V8, down the apron, couple wire clips, forking over to 1 or 2 clamps that come off the motor mount to block bolts and then attaching to the starter.  The assembly manual probably shows this.

If I remember correctly there were two ways to route the starter wire. There was a TSB article put out on the subject since they found a problem with the early routing and changed it

Will look to see if I have that TSB article and related drawings

  • If it does not fit, you need a bigger hammer!

I would just like to add on my June 29 64.5 the mounting hole for the clip is on the opposite area of the battery cut out area then the one pictured above. It is on the same side just closer to the shock tower then the front of the car.
