Headliner color
« on: December 02, 2014, 09:49:59 PM »
So it's too late now, but....

I have a 65 fastback Oct 64 build date.  It has the stand blue interior.  What color should the headliner be.  White?  Blue?  Or light blue?  Whe I ordered the interior and asked and researched and was told light blue.  So that's what a did.  Now I am not sure that is right.  I think it should be white since it's an early 65.

I researched this when I searched for a replacement headliner for my Dearborn built 65 Fastback with an early September 64 build date.  I can't recall my sources (Probably this forum!) but I found that early 65's had a white headliner (Yes, that would include October 64 cars.).  I believe the time frame when colored headliners started being used was around December 64.  As with many parts, this was a running change that was phased in when existing white headliners were used up so an exact cut over date does not apply.  This makes sense with my Fastback.  It's loaded with 64 1/2 parts like hood stops with the hole in the middle, one beveled headlight bucket (good example of early 60's quality control), Eaton power steering pump, wipers and bezel, vent knob with the "A" and carpet to name a few things.

UPDATE:  I've found that many of the publications regarding this and many other topics have errors.  The best advice I get is from the people on this forum.  There are many well respected members that are more than willing to share their wealth of knowledge.

The day night mirror shown in the Oct. '64 built fastback is actually the '66 style with the twist adjuster. The '65 mirror had a toggle, or flipper type switch.
I've noticed that many of these early '65s also had cardboard sun visors.

The standard mirrors had no need for a day/nite adjuster switch.

The day night mirror  shown in the picture (Oct 1964) was first used around February 1965. It isn't unique to 1966 model Mustangs.

I have ivy gold interior (color code 28).  The day/nite mirror is an original mirror, whether it is original to the car or was replaced by the original or second owner (prior to 1992) is not known at this time.  DKutz my car was also build date in San Jose with a production date of 10/29/64.  How close is yours?

So after some research I see some people who say they have "off white". But that color is tinted to the interior color, light blue for blue int, light tan/gold for ivy gold interior. So perhaps mine is right, light blue.  Unfortunately I let the paint shop pull the glass, so any clue left under the gaskets was lost...

I am amazed that this info is not readily available.  I just looked on the tmi website, and they don't list it.  Any other suggestions.
