Topic: '68-'69 Seat Pivot Pin Recall

 This topic has probably been discussed before, but I was curious is any records were kept of the cars which received the repairs, and any particulars about this recall program in general.

And have you ever seen a paper tag like this I found sewn into a late '68's lower seat cover?

The drivers side seat in my dad's 68 broke one day back in the day.  Really tough to drive a stick shift with no power steering and no seat back.  He took the seat to a local welding shop and they repaired it.  About 6 months later he got the recall letter in the mail.  Too late....

I thought the recall was to fix a problem with the back-rest not staying latched?

Have a friend with a '68 Shelby, has a good bit of original interior including seats.  The driver seat will not stay latched.

No, the pivot pin actually broke and the seat back reclined all the way back like todays cars.  LOL.

Took Ford a long time to give in or at least admit the issue - notice the part number assigned to the service campaign part

Think I might have a copy of one of the owner notification post card around here

Wow no wonder that I have only seen one car with the recall part. A lot of the cars were done by then.

 I've repaired plenty of those broken pivot pins. My usual repair involves welding an old valve in it's place.  Most frames have stress cracks and/or broken welds needing to be repaired too.

Ford should have recalled the '65-'67 seat back adjuster bolt. Those seat frames are commonly broken.

When I'm installing seat covers on 64-67 Mustang seats, I weld in a 1/2X1/8C2 inch steel strap between the base and upper tube on the outside pivot pin, about where the "C" clamp is shown in the picture. This is automatic for me to do on "driver" grade cars along with any additional welds on joints and cracks. For show cars, I insist the owner get a better frame. I also add an additional spring or two on the bottom section on "driver" seats, springs do wear out. All the frames I do get bead blasted and painted semi-gloss black, they deserve it.
