Topic: Original Transmission Markings

I pulled my transmission out of my 66 convertible yesterday. I was wanting to clean it but preserve any original markings under the dirt and grime. Whats the best way to do this? I only see some orange paint on top of the tail  piece right now.

If you want to preserve them your only two choices that I know if is clear paint or oil. You can choose to attempt to knock the rust down or neutralize it first.

Guessing your doing a cleaning not a restoration. In that case, pictures, trace paper (if you want them exact) or other products and then restore the trans and reproduce the marks

Sorry for the confusion. I am doing a restoration. The transmission is so covered with sludge. I was wondering what to clean it with, so I get it good and clean without removing any markings that may be underneath all that sludge.

I would start with mineral spirits in a parts washer.

OK here's what I've found so far on my May 66 convertible C4. A red number stamp hard to make out but looks like 4 numbers. An OK stamp with 3 smaller letters above it (you can't see them in the photo, not sure what first two letters are but last one is an "A"). Orange spray paint on the tail section. Couple of Fomoco stamps, one on the dip stick handle and one on the vacuum line bracket. I'll keep cleaning and looking.
