Hello,

I have a 65 metuchen built coupe. In the process of disassembling (and not bagging and tagging as carefully as I should), I've come across several different style U-nuts. Of course the most common I've seen are the ones for attaching the fenders to the aprons, but there are several that I've cleaned up, that I don't know yet where they should go. Is there a U-Nut style / placement guide? Do the Body assembly guides discuss these details?
There are some that are shorter and some that have a more flared end. Some of the shorter ones go to places like the hood latch assembly as far as I can tell, not sure yet about others. Possibly where the fenders attach behind the headlamps to the aprons. (Added pic)

Also, I have 4 SEMS marked bolts. Again, not sure where in the car they came from, but all of my other bolts removed were anchor HTS type with the star washers. Any ideas if these SEMS bolts should be on the car at all, or where they might have belonged? They also have star washers and look exactly the same as the anchor HTS ones except for the logo. I'm talking about the common 5/16s-18 body bolts, not the smaller ones for headlamp buckets (those say sems).  I have read about mix n match toothed star vs disc washer bolts at the plants, but would they also have a chance to mix suppliers... or was there a 'parts is parts' mentality?

My last question... I've seen engine compartment pics with the outer shock cover bolts heads in the engine bay and also with nuts in the bay. Which is correct? My car had the heads in, but IDK the whole history of the car yet either.

These aren't critical issues for me, but more to satisfy my curiousity... And possibly help someone else avoid having to learn the importance of documenting every piece you remove from your Mustang. :)

Thanks!

Do you have the Assembly Manuals and AMK's guide to fasteners?  These can usually get you out of trouble with unidentified fasteners.

The lower left J-clip is typically on a bumper guard or on the side front bumper brackets that attach to the fenders.

Yes but only in generic terms since the manuals do not reflect what specific workers and plants did on a regular basis - only list what Ford engineers thought should be done and what Ford "approved"

For the line workers - they installed what was placed in their bin or station. It was other peoples job to make sure the right part was supplied. If you want to get your car as close as possible to how it came either you need to start with a really good (unplayed with) original car and document what you find or find other good examples from the same plant and time period to reflect what the supply was at that time

For that one its best to know when your car was built (approximately of course since its a 65-66)  You'll find that we're going to ask this just about every time a question is asked (when and where)  ;)

Number of decent examples is limited for 65 NJ cars but looking at cars built before and after your car they all (my examples) point outward with nuts on the wheel side - bolts on the engine compartment side

Toothed washers on the bolts in the 5T172xxx range
Flat washers on the bolts in the 5T201xxx range

Hope this helps

My '65 GT VIN 5T189xxx is pretty close to your VIN 5T193xxx .  All of the bolts in my engine compartment are nuts on the wheel side / bolts on the engine compartment side.  In terms of fender hardware my car has flat washers on the bolts (see pre-restoration photo attached).  A notable exception is that the shock tower braces were secured with toothed washers (at the shock tower) except for 1 bolt (had a flat washer on the driver's side).  No idea why that happened (the braces didn't seem to have ever been taken off).  At the wirewall a bolt with an integrated / flared flat washer was employed.  Hope this all helps.

Regards,

Ron

These are all useful! Thanks.

Ron -  Over by your solenoid on the apron -  did you ever notice a small tubular style rivet to the right of or under it?
I had a rivet there, perhaps 2, they looked like they were always there and it didn't look obvious that they did anything. Was wondering if they were there to hold a relay/circuit breaker for a convertible or something.

I have the same buck tag screw as you do. I was also wondering about that style - I've seen where they are a lower/broader style.

Best,

Perry

IF there had been it would not have been the way the factory would have attached it

Hi Perry - you're welcome.  I just had a chance to check more photos of the restoration over by the solenoid on the apron -  there was no small tubular style rivet to the right of or under it which further validates what Jeff posted.
