Temperature sending unit
« on: October 15, 2014, 11:18:25 AM »
I have checked the forum and the MCA rules but I can't find an answer to this question: was the engine temperature sending unit painted along with the rest of the engine or was it installed after paint? If "natural" what is the correct finish? The reproductions I have seen are all brass. Lastly, from my limited experience, these units seem to leak. Is there a sealant that is commonly accepted to prevent the leak?  Thanks. This engine will get painted soon!

It was added later and not painted and is made of brass. Many use the indian brand gasket sealer (molasses color) .Teflon tape is not considered historical correct if that matters.

Teflon tape is also not recommended in fittings that require an electrical ground.

I've attached a reference pic which I hope is useful. It's from the 289 in my early '66 Metuchen car.

Perfect. Thanks for the paint/no-paint clarification. Brass is what I thought.  Appreciate the close-up photo and the sealer recommendation.  :)
