Correct battery tray for my 68 fastback.....

According to the Osborn assembly manual, there are 2 different battery trays for a 68, one for a car with the RPO 55A battery (?, I think they mean 55A alternator) and one for eveything else. They list a -A and a -B tray, both 68 mustang part numbers. My car has the "heavy duty battery" option and shows a 55a alternator on the build sheet. It came with the C7ZZ battery heat shield as its still present. Unfortunately, what was left of the original battery tray was inadvertantly disposed of so I have nothing to match up.
    It seems that currently there is only one battery tray offered for a 68, and one size battery ( a group 24). Can anyone shed some light on what the difference was in the two battery trays if they are both for a group 24 battery ?
    My car is a very late build Metuchen GT Fastback, 390, 4 speed, AC car (built July 18, 1968)

Your 68 390 car only had one tray available to it which was the 24F tray. The 27 f tray was not introduced to the Mustang until 69. I know for a fact that the smaller 22F tray was used in 67 and 69 (69 used all three tray's). I am not sure for 68 but most likely a 22F tray was used on some applications in 68 and may be the alternate tray you encountered.

That's right Bob.  Many 68 Mustangs used a group 22 battery and tray (6-cyl, 289, 302).

Is the battery heat shield black or gray?

Hi Scott, It's grey..... Theres a photo of my actual shield on the 428cj site (component Id page) . The was also some discussion about the 55 amp alt. callout on my buildsheet .....
