1969 and 1970 Trunk Lid Identification Guide

Put together a new guide here on the 1969 and 1970 trunk lids.  I know there is a few things in here that could use some editing but wanted to get this out to everyone here on the forum for comments and input.  Let me know what you think....

Thank you Marcus nicely done.  I am unclear as to what the 69 MUSTANG molding refers to ?  Not a 63C/Mach 1 thing ?  A side by side 69 w/o cut outs and a 70 w/cut outs might be a little bit more graphic ?  Any extra holes in the 70 for a prop rod ?  Brian

Ok, thanks.  So I like the side by side comparison of the 69 and 70 cut outs so I will see if I can edit in a way where it is easier to see and compare.  As for the prop rod I tried to stay away from adding too much information since its hard to stop.  Because you can also look at the trunk catch/latch, weatherstripping, wiring harness, decals, hinges etc and then you have a 15 page article.  If anyone else thinks info on the prop rod needs to be added let me know.

The MUSTANG letters are the actual letters typically on the back of the trunk of a 69 Mustang.  There is holes in the trunk where the letters would be applied.  Maybe this picture makes that easier to understand:

Duh... must have been a senior moment.  The 69 assembly line/OE trunk lid is pre-drilled to accept the MUSTANG lettering.  The 70 and service replacement trunk lids are not.  Sorry Brian

And actually since we are talking about all the different models of 69 and 70 I should be more specific and mention that the 70 Boss cars would have the MUSTANG letters on the back as well just like in 1969.

Not all 69 was pre drilled ;) The T-5 was not.

Yes...agreed, not all were pre-drilled.  I need to find a way to word that so its not confusing.

The gentleman that painted my car 18 years ago said that he taped off the "HENRY" on the underside of the deck lid.  The car was born 6-2-69.

Is the "HENRY" a factory stamp?

Hi Marcus, under the 1969 and 1970 Boss 302 trunk lid paint - underside section (don't forget to add that 1970 Metuchen built Boss 302's didn't get the underside black out treatment, they remained body color.  Keep these Identification guides coming, awesome stuff.

The HENRY stamp is indeed an original inspector stamp.  I have pictures of that exact stamp from original paint cars so I have personally seen it. 

And yes, I need to amend the information on the Boss302 trunk lid paint.  Will get that done.

Henry (last name was too long to make that a stamp as usually done) was a short Mexican gentleman that worked the line as a paint inspector at San Jose.  Because of his seniority and maybe other factors  he mostly worked the Mustang body line. He stayed local after he left Ford (plant closed down, going to work for Westinghouse where a close friend worked with him and got his (well at least one of them) inspection stamp during the 80's if I recall the right period. Have tons of examples of his stamp on cars as well as others

I dont want to get too far off on topic with the inspector stamps but I have three other San Jose stamps I have pictures of.  I dont remember Jeff if you are keeping track of this somewhere here on the forum.  This one below, plus one stamped RIM and one stamped DFLLY.  Both are from the end of 1968 time frame around November December.

Do you plan to include the stamp identification process which was used at the various assembly plants?

We know that San Jose used stamps on the underside of the deck lids in 69 but did they stamp in 1970?

We're they stamped or did some inspectors used a chalk mark?  Please advise.  Thanks.
