Cowl Seal Retainer Finish
« on: September 12, 2014, 03:56:39 PM »
My question concerns the correct finish for the "L" shaped metal retainers at each end of the cowl-to-hood seal.  This is for a San Jose 1965 car built around Jan. - Feb. 1965.  I thought they were painted SG black, then saw some that were P&O finish, but these recently removed from a 1965 Dearborn car sure look painted to me.  Maybe it is plant specific?

Anyway,  can someone advise me on the correct finish?  The assembly manual says the screws are S2 (P&O) finish.  (BTW, this question is not related to any of the cars in my signature.)

Great question Jim.  No help here but mine, including the screws, were painted before I touched them up.  Brian

I've always for San Jose ones to be phosphate & oil (P&O)   often dusty finish after all these years but with a little clean up, most of the time out here they are almost/sometimes reusable as is.

Now 64 1/2????  Not referring to those ;)

Sorry to bring this topic back up but was there ever a resolution to this question? Should they be phosphate or black? Might as well ask for the time frame of both my cars if it matters

An October '64 San Jose car that I recently disassembled had black painted ones.  When the black was stripped off with lacquer thinner, they were natural steel underneath, they are originals with the A marking.  I've mostly seen phosphate/oil also, so a bit perplexed by this one.

I don't know about this time but many times when there is a finish difference it can be traced back to a difference in vendors.
