1967 14" Styled Steel Wheels
« on: September 02, 2014, 08:56:20 PM »
I have a 1967 Mustang Fastback 390 GTA, the Marti Report says it came with 14" Styled Steel Wheels. When I went to purchase them, there were many styles of them. Any help would help. Many options to choose from Like 5.5", 6" wide wheels, Black rims with chrome centers and beauty rings, like in the attached photo. http://www.cjponyparts.com/scott-drake-wheel-14-inch-x-5-5-inch-styled-steel-1967/p/W526-V/
Thanks in advance,
Travis Waters

For 1967 I believe that they should be 14 x 5-1/2 wide with beauty rings. The MPC calls out 'painted grey'.

I wasn't sure if the rim is supposed to be black with chrome center and black inserts like the photo or if the rim was all chrome with black inserts. Here's what I have to choose from,

14x5.5, rim painted black, centers around stud holes a charcoal gray. Trim rings (I believe polished and not brushed for 67 but not 100% sure on that detail).  The lower one looks more correct, but can't tell if the centers are black or gray.  Originals of course are riveted not welded ;)

The centers are supposed to have charcoal gray and not the bronze?

Thanks

Even though it is a Cougar shop, WCCC(West Coast Classic Cougar) has a lot of info about Mustangs on their website. They show that 1968 is the only year that both Cougar and Mustangs had trim rings with the brushed look(http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/c8zz-1210-b.html) on the trim rings, so 67 would be chrome. I actually have 68 Cougar styled steel on my '67 coupe with 68 trim rings and red mustang centers, painted "dark argent" instead of the light argent that is correct for the Cougar. It doesn't look bad to most people, but then they don't know it's not correct.

I have another question. The color of the center caps

Blue and the chrome base is designed with a somewhat scalloped/spoke design

Don't know about all years of Cougars  - Ford describes 70 and 71 at least as brushed also but all this talk is getting off thread a bit ;)

I'm cleaning up & repainting my OE styled steel wheels (has the rivets).

Anybody with a good recommendation for the CHARCOAL color?

ALSO: It looks like the outer BLACK portion of the wheels may have been dipped rather than sprayed. Any good ideas how to try and duplicate these two different finishes, a durable "do-able" process that will last? I will have all the paint removed after the EvapoRust eats away the rust. Since there was some minor pitting inside the wheel, Boeshield should work to help keep rust from returning I think..but I was looking for a process order after all the rust and paint is gone. Something on the order of:

1.) Clean Wheels and soak in Evaporust till all rust is gone.
2.) Aviation Stripper on any remaining paint.
3.) (next step?)
4.) (next step?)
5.) (next/final step?)
6.) Mount & Balance Tires

I have 3rd wheel soaking in Evaporust, first two already de-rusted, I am stripping the paint now.

If the chrome is OK, then lightly sand and paint the backs and rim part of the front semi-gloss black. Then mask and paint the charcoal. If the chrome is not OK, think new.

I know this is a very old thread. Wondering what paint is recommended for the argent portion of the wheels. These would be for my signature car, if plant and time-frame make a difference.

Thanks,
Mark

So simply charcoal paint would be applicable?
