Air Cleaner Decals - Sept 64 289 4V
« on: September 01, 2014, 01:53:34 PM »
Here's what I'm working with...

1965 Fastback
Build date of September 2, 1964
289 4V
PS and PB
No AC

My question is what is the correct Autolite Spark Plug Decal to put on the Air cleaner and it's placement?  The rectangular one that I see on the drivers side of the air cleaner housing or the curved one that is on top of the air cleaner towards the back?  I thought it was the curved one on top of the air cleaner but I've seen it both ways in pictures of restored Mustangs.  I ordered the decal from ECS Automotive and they sent the rectangular one.  I'm not so sure this is correct even though I gave them all the info regarding my fastback.

I also was wondering about the "Use Genuine FoMoCo Replacement Parts" decal that I sometimes see on the drivers side of the air cleaner.  Would this decal apply to my application?  I've seen a couple of photos of this decal on restored cars when the Autolite spark plug decal is on top of the air cleaner.  Would it be used if the Rectangular Autolite spark plug decal is used?

Here is my Aug 64 Dearborn coupe 289 4V aircleaner. Note the 289 decal is actually a C code one. Factory screw up or the 4V ones weren't available yet. No front decal or the small part # decal on the passenger side.

Wow, that's interesting mgmradio.  Technically the car is a 289.  I could see the factory slapping that one on, using what they had or putting on the wrong decal.  Nothing surprises me.  You have the rectangular Autolite decal on the side, minus the "FRONT" decal and part number decal.  Interesting.

Thanks a bunch mgmradio.  You've been a big help.  I'll put the engine displacement decal on the top, front of the air cleaner.  I'll put the rectangular Autolite spark plug decal on the side of the air cleaner on the drivers side in the approximate position as in your photo.  I won't put on the Front decal on the front of the air cleaner.  I won't put a part number decal on the side of the air cleaner on the drivers side (I can't find one of these anyway.).  The only decal that I'm unsure of is the "Use Genuine FoMoCo Replacement Parts" decal.  Was this decal typically omitted on Mustangs with a 289 4V built around September 2, 1964?  I forgot to mention my Mustang is a Dearborn built car with a C4 transmission.  Does anybody else have additional air cleaner pictures for a 289 built around the same date as my Mustang?

Mark, my car came of the Dearborn line on Aug 28 1964. It is unrestored with 4500 original miles. Don't think you will find one closer to your build date. It's a 289 4V , 4 speed.

I agree with you 100%!  I'm going by the picture you posted.  I'm just not clear on the "Use Genuine FoMoCo Replacement Parts" decal.  It's usually on the drivers side of the air cleaner.  The picture you posted was taken at a front angle so It's not clear to me if the Use Genuine Parts decal is on the side of the air cleaner.  Can you clear this up for me?

The two decals you see in the picture are the only two present. There is no other signs of any other being used.
