Tie down brackets for a Dearborn 1964 1/2
« on: August 11, 2014, 10:15:09 AM »
Can anyone elaborate or show some pics on the exact positioning of the tie down brackets for a Dearborn assembled 64 1/2?? I'm confused on how they are supposed to go, inside-outside framerail, hook to the front or back? And would this differ between plants/ years or was there "standard protocol" with their installation? Thanks !!

The installation and type of bracket can differ between plants, as well as single or dual exhaust applications

Since we know your car is a 64 1/2 Dearborn one I guess we can assume that its a single exhaust car.

Checked my pictures (about 200 cars) and could not find a non-restored example with the tie downs still on the car.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, it's a single exhaust, 260 v8. My guess is that they are mounted outboard between the outside portion of the rail and the trunk drop off. Still not quite sure if the hook attachment point, (round hole), is facing forward or towards the rear valance. Since it sounds like there is no definite "protocol" on this, would an early 65' pic be better than my guess?? Same plant, single exhaust.. If you have any..

I looked through all my pictures of 65 Mustangs built at all plants and found no pictures of any remaining on any of the unrestored cars I have pictures of. Except for two 65 San Jose cars. An A code and a T code. Maybe the dealers were more focused to removing the tie downs and returning them for credit as instructed by Ford during 1964-65 since this reduced rattles and contact between parts

Lot more original examples in the 66 - in later years Ford published TSB articles because of the number of complaints, especially on dual exhaust cars, of rattles caused by the brackets

For those that choose not to reinstall them its a good idea to at least bolt them in and then remove them so that the "scars" are present in a concour restoration. Nice additional touch IMHO

Both of my June 65 cars have them. I'll see if I can get pictures later.

Are they the 3 bolt, or two bolt style, long or short??

Thanks MGM,

I thought I read somewhere that the long ones were used only on dual exhaust cars. Yours look original to the car though.
