Position of interior door handles
« on: August 06, 2014, 09:21:11 PM »
Looking for advice concerning the position of the interior door handles. The body assembly manual states that for standard interior the handles should be oriented downward 30-40 degrees from the horizontal. That said, most pics I see show the handles installed as close to horizontal as possible. Which is correct?

I included a couple of photos from the Mustang Recognition guide by Farr, Heasley and Kopec. I know these are not real time photos, but they are photos that the sales brochures actually used. It shows the handles on a downward angle. Probably pretty close to 30-40*. These photos were in the 67 section of the recognition guide.

I think really its owner preference as to how much angle is safe and comfortable. JMO

On standard interiors, it would be correct for them to be pointed down. I remember leveling them off on my cars in the late 70's, early 80's because they looked dorky to me pointing downwards. Deluxe interior cars are completely different and must point upwards to fit in the door panel pockets.

That's a good question. My observations have been 4:30 (o'clock) on the driver side, and 7:30 on the passenger side. It looks right, the knob is out of the way, and feels like a natural place to stop when you roll up the window.

Are you asking about 1967 interior door handles or 1968?

Interesting thread (and I assume about '67 handles).  Have to say it's a detail I overlooked in the past.

Went through my pics and found a picture of the 3 mile '67 fastback, unrestored, 7F02C168820

I couldn't help but notice in the picture that the door panel seems to have a screw at the top front corner of the door panel?  Am I seeing that right?  And if so, was that a common thing to retain the door panels at the corner?

No idea what that is, but would not be typical for there to be a screw.

Thanks, I thought maybe it was just a trick of the light or something in the picture.

That's just a nutty angle for a door handle.  Is it even ergonomically reasonable?

I wondered the same thing.  Was this door handle angle supposed to be the same for '65-66s?  Sorry if that's comparing apples to oranges.   :)

The 65-66 angles were about 75 degrees up from where the std '67 is...  I've positioned '67 handles like 65-66 and never thought anything about it.

That's what I've always done too.  Glad I wasn't the only one!!   :)
