Rear Axle Details
« on: August 04, 2014, 10:40:21 PM »
Looking for advise on detailing my rear axle:
Photos from previous owner show some details and I have photos of car prior to being taken apart. the two photos show some markings but I would like to get opinions.
First is the back of the axle. if you zoom in  to the bottom center it appears to have a 3X and a D below it. By the right coiled brake line it has markings that I can't make out. Opinions of what it may be or leave it off?
Second photo appears to be large Yellow Daub MArk
Third photo appears to be V4T in Yellow with an H below it.

I welcome some confirmations or opinions if you have seen any markings similar or can share similar photos

thanks
Brian

If you can't make it out after cleaning and some pictures I would leave it off - you can always add it later. Not unusual, especially on not real clear examples) for you to only make out maybe 30% of what was there and reproducing that looks like bloches and bits all over the place. You Might want to take a close up, play with the contrast and such, highlight what you have and play connect the dots to see what might appear.

Often on the drivers side you will find colored stripes indicating where the vent/brake junction were to be attached. This year I've seen light blue used for that indicator

Rear typical to have a real large school bus yellow daub in the upper box on N cases in 69

Third photo appears to be V4T in Yellow with an H below it.

Have a very similar example from a 428 car in the Early April Dearborn period

Just as a possibility check the end of the rear housing tubes where the flange for the axle and backing plate is welded in for color ;)

Other possible locations for marks

On the housing tube between the between the mounting U bolts.

Top of the housing to the drivers side of the center section

You'll find all kinds of things on restored cars - glad the conversation isn't going that direction :)

Hope this helps and thanks for sharing
