69 trap door latch pin, San Jose February
« on: August 03, 2014, 09:18:04 AM »
Found that the shaft of the pin is defiantly silver zinc, the zinc stops short of the loop.
The loop handle part does not have any signs of paint left on it, would the loop be natural or painted what color ?

In my opinion the whole thing should have a zinc plating on it.

I dont think those are the correct style screws from what I have seen in the past as I dont have any examples that are philps head.  The finish on the screws I have seen are both zinc dichromate and phosphate/natural.

Unpainted along with the  rest of the latch.

Had some of these tested (xray what every it it test)  once for NPD when they were going to produce them. Will have to look for that email or notes

Looks through my collection and every 69 one I've got or have pictures of is bright or clear zinc from top to bottom as well as the main body of the latch

All the San Jose and Dearborn ones I've got were retained with the hex head machine bolts

Thank you for the replies, here is a photo of the latch and screws. Screws are the yellow zinc

Matches what I've seen and found - of course, as always the dichromate in the finish often does not hold up well over time leaving us with the zinc outer surface we see on many examples
