« on: July 22, 2014, 09:29:35 AM »
Am wondering what kind of color was used on the early 64.5-65 horns. They look to have some gloss to them but am looking for correct color to paint horns back so looking for some opinions on early Dearborn car?Any recommendations on paint would be appreciated also

Since you used the term early are you asking about the one attached to the strut rod brackets or the radiator support?

The standard looking 65 style were semi-gloss black but since they were painted by the supplier the amount of shine can differ allot when compared to the engine compartment black.

Never really paid attention which one was high or low - instead try and focus on the shape and direction of the horn. With that said here are some 65 examples for you to consider. Hope it answers your question

I tend to remember them as both curling in and downward in towards the center of the radiator as shown in the following pictures

Did recall your working on a Dearborn so those are the pictures I included and why some of the details look different from those that are use to San Jose cars ;)

The mounting brackets for the horns have a dimple and the hole for the attaching bolt.  These line up with the two holes for each horn in the core support.  The horns when thoroughly cleaned or glass beaded will have two "HI" and two "LO" on each respective horn.  The HI can only be properly mounted on the driver's side of the radiator and the LO on the passenger.
Before you take the time to clean them up, test them to make sure they are working.  If you use any kind of media to blast them, tightly stuff a paper towel into the horn to prevent the media from getting in.  You can then use a pliers to pull the towel out before painting.
