HD Battery on all 70's w/ a/c?
« on: July 15, 2014, 01:00:52 PM »
Will the Group 27 battery and cables show up as an option on Marti reports or will it just be a 'known requirement' if the car has a/c?  My Marti does not show it as an option so I'm wondering do I use standard Group 24 battery & cables or Group 27 battery & cables.  1970, built 11/20/1969, Metuchen, 351C, 4V, automatic, w/ a/c.  Thanks

The 27 was a heavy duty option battery on the smallblock that didn't automatically get added with AC on 69 models .On those the heavy duty battery option was spelled out on the Marti report.  I can't say for sure on a 70 model 351C . Did you have the larger 27 F tray that made you suspect the larger battery ? Of course it is your car and you can upgrade as you see fit. It is one of those things that could easily be changed ( FYI battery cables are the same for ether Battery) back .The bolt in tray and the battery are the only difference. Your alt and regulator are going charge ether  the 24 or 27 F.

Yes, the tray that came with the car is the larger tray, from its condition I would assume it's the original. Any idea on where to find a correct battery shield? NPD has a 14300-14 listed as concours light duty (from 11/11/69) & 14300-15 concours heavy duty. Both say for 70-71, the -15 includes 351C CJ so maybe that one is actually only for a 71 351C?

No one reproduces the 70 battery shields. Some have looked into it but nothing I believe is in the works AFAIK. Difference is the design of the upper lip that is formed around the top edge.  might have to settle using one of the 67-69 versions (available in reproduction form) or a used D4 shield

Must be talking battery cables now and thought we were working on a 70 not a 71  :o

14300-14A does not list an application past a 1970 one where the 14300-1 lists the "(FROM 11/11/69), 250, 302, 351C EXCL BOSS OR CJ, 351W"

14300-15 shows BOSS 302, BOSS 351, 351C CJ, 428 CJ, 428 SCJ, BOSS 429, 429 CJ, 429 SCJ

Looks like I'll go without a shield until I find one.  No need to spend $69.99 for one that is wrong.  And the 14300-14 is the set I'll get.  Thanks!

[14300-1 lists the "(FROM 11/11/69), 250, 302, 351C EXCL BOSS OR CJ, 351W"]  did you mean 14300-14?  If you did that's why I figured this was the correct one.

[14300-15 shows BOSS 302, BOSS 351, 351C CJ, 428 CJ, 428 SCJ, BOSS 429, 429 CJ, 429 SCJ] Originally I was thinking maybe this was the correct one, but I don't think the 351C 4V was considered a CJ in '70.  That's why I figured 14300-14 is correct but maybe I'm thinking about it wrong.   :-\

You'll likely do fine with the first one - when I searched the NPD site there was a -14A and a -1 that came up  for some reason - both with the same picture

The whole 351 CJ naming thing has been something that has been discussed for many years so would rather not go there :)
