Black or charcoal-black for consoles?
« on: July 13, 2014, 05:50:36 PM »
I am thoroughly embarrassed that I must ask this question. My quick search within this and the old vintage-mustang forums revealed conflicting information, thus I have to ask:

Were the center floor consoles painted black, OR charcoal-black metallic for '67? I have two consoles, both with the same part number molded into them, yet one appears to truly be a black plastic and the other appears to be made from a plastic which has a green/olive hue but was then painted black. Therefore, I'm no longer certain whether or not these consoles were painted the same charcoal black metallic as every other interior plastic piece.
Help?

Also, are my eyes bad or is it correct to believe that the painted sections of the pot-metal pieces of the consoles use plain-old black paint, regardless of whether or not the plastic sections were black or charcoal?

I thought the kick panels were supposed to be just "black" on black interiors. The olive colored console may have been a two-toned ivey gold (dark color) console repainted black. The other sounds like it is an original black, look on the bottom, inside of the base and see if there is any signs of repainting. If its is original, not repainted, look at the non-textured areas and there is your answer. Should be just plain old black.

"just plain old black"....hmmm, OK. Did this change later, wherein the charcoal paint was used? I read the following post which, for '69, seems to imply use of the charcoal-black paint for the console??? http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4890.0

As for the console I have that appears to be made of a green/olive plastic, I really don't see any signs that it was ever repainted.... if it was repainted, someone did an incredible job of stripping it before repainting. :-)

I just want to be sure I repaint my console correctly..... still not clear to me I should use plain black or charcoal black. Sorry for my confusion.

The charcoal black was only used on the metal surfaces. The plastic parts were molded with the color. The camera case  part on the top of the console was semi gloss black regardless of the console color. Many of the consoles have been redyed to a different color to work in another car.
Hope this helps

Consoles main bodies were not painted so I believe that is where the challenge is, hard to recommend what color to paint them when they weren't painted ;)

Can you use the black body you have (guessing that you have black interior) then cleaning and applying a solution to freshen it up.

As its been mentioned the upper tray details are just semi-gloss black with not too much paint since it will lessen the camera texture

(OFF TOPIC question)

Marty, isn't the trim along the windshield at the front of a BLACK dash pad also black? (this has been my understanding, but hadn't asked/looked for the answer yet)

The windshield trim was color coordinated to the dash pad and was not glossy to reduce glare.

I've seen the trim for the pad charcoal also (that is the way its also listed in the paint manuals)  the charcoal does not stand out IMHO against the black dash pad - in its original form with no dressings and such ;)
