69 San Jose Mach I, M code 4 Speed Paint Marks?
« on: July 06, 2014, 05:49:52 PM »
rbrown9  originally posted a thread and we're going to recreate it - for others that were viewing that tread this might seem familar ;)

VIN for my 2V car is 9R02H129510 Power Disc Brakes, 4 Speed, M/S, Non A/C, San Jose Built on 1/6/1969. I am using parts off a NJ 69 4V Mach 1 with a similar build date since may were missing from my car when I got it. I want to apply the correct paint markings on my parts as I reinstall them.

Shocks (Semi-Gloss Black)-Front-White, Rear-Brown?
Upper/Lower Ball Joins- Painted Yellow before the nut to hold to the spindle is put on?
Steering Box- Light Green mark on top of box between 2 flat spots of box, Yellow mark where front bullet portion on box is and Yellow mark where top bolt holds box to frame rail?
Idler Arm Mounting Bracket- Green horizontal mark between 2 mounting holes?
Idler Arm "Arm Itself", Drag Link, Pitman Arm- Pink Markings on all 3? You were researching this and noticed 2 different colors in 69 and were investigating which color to put on my parts then get back to me.
Front Coil Springs- Yellow and Tan?
Drive Shaft- Light Blue, Lavendar, Red?
Inner/Outer Tie Rods- No Markings found on San Jose Cars?
Strut Rods- Under Investigation.
Coil Spring Seats- Under Investigation.
Front Sway Bar 7/8"- Under Investigation.
Spindles- Under Investigation.
Tubular Frame Support Under Investigation.

Wow - that is a long list and not one where we can answer all of them in one swift post. There is no answer book and the research must be done with using buildsheets from other cars built the same way and hopefully from the same time, as well as documented original cars equipped the same as yours. There are a few "guide books" that have been published for years that use much newer MPCs and service replacement part marks that I would not suggest using as a reference. Also just knowing the correct color of the ID mark still leaves you with trying to figure out how (size, type/style and product) the mark was normally applied.

We'll take some time and go through you list (which includes some of the responses already from the last thread) and see where we can help. I invite anyone with a buildsheet of a car equipped exactly the same as Roberts car to help out where they can

Vehicle - 9R02H129510 Power Disc Brakes, 4 Speed, M/S, Non A/C, San Jose Built on 1/6/1969.
(can do this allot quicker since the research is already been looked at - just catching up ;)

Shocks (Semi-Gloss Black)
Marked     Front-White, Rear-Brown

Upper/Lower Ball Joints-
Marked     Yellow on the spindle stud  before the nut to hold to the spindle is put on

Steering Box-
You offered some patches of paint (color not there) you found on the manual steering box you have and I tried to match them up to some original examples I had, coming up with the following suggestions
Marked     Light Green mark on top of box between 2 flat spots of box. Have this on a couple of other manual boxes but in other locations. Still would work to identify it for what ever purpose it was used/applied IMHO
White brush mark where front bullet portion on box is
Yellow mark on the case  where top bolt holds box to frame rail?

Idler Arm Mounting Bracket
Marked     Green horizontal mark between 2 mounting holes

Idler Arm "Arm Itself", Drag Link, Pitman Arm-

As mentioned before I'm trying to come to some conclusion as to what to suggest.  Would rather effort on the side of adding nothing if we're unsure since the lack of a paint mark (or all marks) sill not cost points at a show but the wrong ones will cost point and run the risk that someone will see them and copy them thinking that they are correct. So checking

Front Coil Springs-
Marked     Yellow and Tan

Drive Shaft-
Marked     Light Blue, Lavender, Red

Inner/Outer Tie Rods-
Strut Rods-
Coil Spring Seats-
Tubular Frame Support- (believe this is the gloss black support/cross member under the engine)

Never have seen marks on any of these on a 69 San Jose Mustang or Cougar

Front Sway Bar 7/8"-
Looking into it - have some marks but can't be sure if they apply to your application. And unfortunately the 69 buildsheets don't include this mark like they do on 70-up ones :(

Spindles-
Have some of these - just have to look at my pictures from my (we'll until I sold it) Jan 69 San Jose Mach
