'68 splash shield seal install
« on: July 05, 2014, 08:51:09 PM »
Have seen examples of the rubber strips on the two large rear shield mounted all on the wheel side of the shield, all on the backside of the shield, and recently took apart a pair where two of the seals were on one side, and one (the upper middle) on the other.

Is there a "correct" way or were they somewhat randomly applied?

May '68 Dearborn coupe if it matters.

I don't have allot of pictures of that detail on those cars but here are two, what look to be original, examples to help. From mid and late 68 production and both done the same way

Thanks Jeff, can't really make out the smaller inner ones location, or if the main one is on the back or front in those... anyone else got a pic of a set installed on a restoration project or disassembly or on the bench showing them a bit clearer...???

It looks to me that Jeff's pictures have them both on the front side. I looked at two samples I have, only one set can be dated. My 11/66 have the top rubber strips stapled from the back and the Side strips also stapled from the back though the side rubber is all missing so I assume the rubber was on the back also. The other undated set I have, the top rubber is also stapled from the back but the side rubber is there and stapled on the front side of the metal. Most likely assumption (hate that word) is that the worker doing the work did it whatever they wished. Since I have my originals and the staples are still in them, my intentions are to duplicate the results based upon the direction the staples went in . That is what seems to be the "correct" way. It would seem that the curled ends had to always be on the metal side of the stapling. I bought the 2nd set to replace one damaged one. I hadn't yet noticed the difference so this is a good thread.  I may have followed the staples on the replacement shield by mistake.

But since he's looking into 68's  67 examples may possibly lead to the wrong conclusion if we follow that path? :)

Not saying they might not be the same - but think we need to be careful as we have found allot of different patterns and parts being used when comparing years months and plants.  To get off track with 67's have you noticed the different retainers used on 67 San Jose front splash shields?  Another subject for another thread

Jeff - SJ retainers as in rubber to metal, or the screws that mount the metal?  John

If I've got the orientation of the picture (top one)  correct the top two are from the drivers side

If so then then those match the ones I posted but will wait for your confirmation - easy to get turned around with the parts off the car :)

Drivers side,  looking towards front of car. Your pics looking the other direction. Was trying to show the other side of the shields.

Thanks - maybe its a time period thing. We'll go back through and post what each of the examples I posted was built and when (opps - already did ;). Maybe we can figure out a pattern

Thanks for all the info.  I waded thru many of my old photos and finally found a few examples, 3 San Jose cars,  Dec '67 thru April '68.

No ones of the current Dearborn project (misplaced them or just failed to note this detail), and there was no clear pattern.

As the clearest photos were as shown above, all on the back side of the rear shields, I just did that.  As it appears a bit of a crap shoot.

The fronts seem consistent with the rubber on the side facing the wheel.
