6 cylinder a/c fan shroud
« on: June 20, 2014, 08:17:44 PM »
I am trying to correct some things I lost points on in Springfield, one of them is my a/c fan shroud. I have a 66 dearborn built  6 cylinder Jan 17, 66 build date, convertible. I was fortunate enough to find an original FOMOCO 6 blade, 15" fan blade. Research I found said ALL a/c cars had fan shrouds.

The one I have is a fiberglass reproduction from Classic Auto Air in Florida. My judging sheet from MCA said it was totally wrong. I guess that leads me to several questions.
1. Does anyone have a picture of an original one
2. Does anyone make a concours correct one for 6 cylinders. I know 6 cylinders and A/C's were not common so It may be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Thanks so much for any help.

Terry,

No one is making a correct reproduction 6 Cylinder shroud that I know of at this time. They can be found if you're patient enough; some are reasonably priced, some are ridiculously high. I purchased one listed on eBay for $65.00. At the same time someone else had one listed for $495.00...and was pretty rusty. The Brackets are another thing you'll need; again be patient, they'll turn up. Swap Meets may be another source if you have any in your area.

I've attached a few photos; the Shroud of course and the bracket...you'll need four.

Ray thanks so much for the info and pics. My fiberglass one looks somewhat like the original, but a lot of ways different. Surprisingly enough the brackets I got from Classic Auto Air look a whole lot like, the originals. I'm not sure of the measurements, but the design and shape are identical.

I'm curious about the Brackets you got from Classic Auto Air. If they are the same, I can quit trying to make my own; takes about 6 hours to make just one by hand.

I posted a photo with the Dimensions, hopefully the one you found is the same.

I like the last picture; I wonder if the Shroud was even needed with what looks like a 4-core Radiator? It took some work to mount it with that spacing hardware.

Is this fan shroud the same used on a 64 or 65 Fairlane?  Think I have an NOS C4OZ or C5OZ all metal fan shroud similar in shape.

Personally, I have no idea if the 6-Cylinder Shrouds are the same for the different Models. I just found out that the Falcon and Comet Shrouds are the same but the larger Fairlane may have had a larger Radiator and similar Shroud; only an uneducated guess. Maybe the dimensions in my picture will help answer that question.

Since these Shrouds are not that easy to find, it would be nice to know if they are the same; may make it easier to find having a broader choice of Car Models to pick from.

Checked the '66 single year MPC and it shows a 6 cyl fan shroud as C3DZ-8146-C

The support brackets are listed as a different line item for 6 cyl also, C2DZ-8149-A, 4 per vehicle

Does it say in the MPC if those part numbers are the same for all Ford and Mercury Cars with 6's for the pre-'67 Model Years?

Mercury would have its own MPC.
My guess would be that Comet shares many drivetrain parts with the Falcon
so the Comet may very well use the same shroud and brackets but it should
be first verified.

It's interesting how things work out, in my quest for an original fan shroud, I have ended up with three! One I got on E-bay and two came from a contact that suskeenwiske gave me.  I had mentioned about the brackets on the repro I have that I got from Classic Auto Air, and the look just like the originals. I haven't taken them off yet to compare but I think there really good reproductions or originals cleaned and painted.

The one thing I have noticed is the AMK shroud mounting kit came with steel washers to go with the bolts that mount the bracket to the shroud, and the originals do not have washers. I didn't see them on the pics mustang6er posted either.

If anyone has need of an original shroud for 6 cylinder let me know I plan to list them on E-bay. One is in great shape, the other I am going to have to hammer out a few bends around the diameter of the fan blade area. One will have 4 brackets, and one 3.

I also want to thank everyone for their input and help. This is why this is my favorite forum, thanks all!!!
