I am going to inspect a 66 mustang convertible for a friend tomorrow. She is a 289 toploader 4 speed...............
Where are the date codes located?
If your asking about sheet metal they are on just about 95% of all the sheet metal panels that make up the car. It would take up allot of time just to compile a complete list and their location. I know I've tried
A very very short list for 65-66's off the top of my head
Fenders - fender lip
Inner fender panels - passenger rear - in the center of the panel, Driver rear - on top where the fender bolts on/second Vin location, Drivers front - under the washer bag
Inner fender to firewall/cowl transition - on top of the small panel
Sway bar mounting brackets - facing up to the engine compartment
Rear bumper brackets welded to trunk floor - on top of the piece
Firewall - under the front edge of the passenger side carpet
Floor - depends on the body type. Don't recall the convertible
Doors inner panel (outer panel is dated also) behind the door panel
Each frame rail will have one on the inner and one on the outer surface
Rocker panel - on the bottom surface by pinchweld
Front bumper - drivers side square extension near bumper bracket
Taillight panel - behind the rear valance
Front lower valance - on one of the "ear" that extends up under the front bumper
Some will be right side up some may be reversed. For others stamping locations differ depending on year and even stamping plant
Does this car have tags on the intake, transmission and rear end if the car has not been molested?
Yes they did
There is some red oxide visible in the tunnel on the undercarriage and it looks dry with no undercoating. She was born 6-4-1966 in San Jose. Other inspection suggestions any of you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Check everything, do an inventory, check for rust and past damage, A complete inspection should take you 4 or so hours a little more if the car is on the ground
