Shifter top Plate ?

     I will be doing some work on the stock shifter soon and, I guess, now is the time to ask ?  Is there a plate above the Shifter Boot and below the floor console ?  The re-assembly process would be;

1. Install lower shift boot with flange resting on the trans. hump hole topside.
2. Install upper shift boot with flange/lip resting on the lower boot.  No carpet in between ?
3. Carpet over both the lower and upper boots.
4. Seems like this would be a good place for a trim ring of sorts ?
5  Install floor console.
6. Or is it simple rubber shift boot and screws over carpet/pad/lower shift boot ?  All below the console's 4 speed shifter plate ?

Always thought it was as follows to insure that the seals - seal  but now need to find a picture to support my recall

Top to bottom on a non- console car

Bezel/trim ring
Carpet
Shifter boot
Linkage boot
Floor


For your question on the Cj site - the shifter should not wobble once the bolts are installed and tightened - the rubber sleeves work as an insulator from the vibration but there should not be enough play for the shifter to wobble unless your heavy hand makes it so ;)

Thanks Jeff.  This is a console car your reply was for a non-console car ?  If there is supposed to be a trim ring for a console car ? I don't have one and will need to find out about one.  About the wobble at the shaft.  The shoulder bolts limit the downward threaded travel.  Maybe add another washer to the top ?  I left well enough alone and just put it all back together.. The wobble in the 69 is no more noticeable than the wobble in my 65.    Brian

Stayed/sidestepped that one - because I wanted to be sure once I posted. Need to double check and find some data to share ;)

If the rubber bushings are designed correctly the compression should be right. Too loose or too tight will often produce  a buzzing. Not fun to listen to
