Front Bumper Removal
« on: June 05, 2014, 01:16:34 PM »
Question regarding disassembly and assembly of the front bumper.  Can one take off the front valance and then remove the  front bumper or does the bumper have to come off first?  Same for putting it back together, can the bumper be attached first and then the front valance?  I read the shop manual on how to remove the front bumper and I don’t like the idea of using tape to protect the valance if I can just remove that first…

Thanks
Chris

You can remove the front valence, but you'll need to remove the headlights to unplug the parking light wiring and then feed it down through the grommet hole.  You'd also have to remove front bumper guards.

Personally, I think removing the valence is unnecessary work to remove/install a bumper, but I've done a ton of them, so it's no big deal.  I would use a couple layers of cloth tape to protect the valence where the bumper bolts are.

Thanks Charles.  I have the front headlight assemblies already out as I am doing all the screws, buckets, etc since those have over spray on them from when the car was repainted awhile ago.  The bumper brackets on the ends have surface rust and need to redo those.  Summer is our downtime here in AZ due to the heat.  110 degress these past few days...

Remove the valence to get the bumper out. It entails a bit more effort but you will find it a lot simpler to re-install. If it was good enough for an assembly line procedure, why re-invent the wheel?

The ONLY trouble I would caution you on if also taking off the valance since it just occurred to me on Monday while taking my valance off. (a '67, same basic principles.
One of the bolts going into the caged nuts was rusted worse than the other 3, that is the bolts that connect the valance to the fender. It twisted the valance a little bit before I figured out it was stuck (the other 3 all had come out fine & this was the last one. It surprised me, but it happened. I'll have a little repair work now on my otherwise pristine valance ;)

Not totally off subject but the side brackets that hold it to the fender?  They should be black correct?
