70 mach firewall hole

Ok 70 Mach 1 351c 4bl Metuchen plant and not an original AC car but has AC now. On the first pic posted with all the numbers there is no hole to the left of number 11 and above number 3 on that car. In the pic of the car with the red jack stands there is a hole there and another hole to the left of that with the rubber plug. Anyone know what either hole was for or which cars had those?

Secondly mine has the hole to the left of #11 but has this funny looking plug in it (the third picture).  I am beginning to think it is not original?  It has two holes in it that are open right through to under the dash.

Any idea of when any of the three cars in the pictures were built?? No reason, for looking  IMHO, at early cars (for example) when you have a late car - Often these can be running changes not used through the whole production year

 So lets start with a solid foundation to work from ;) - I think your looking at examples with different options, applications and time periods from your car and this is creating some confusion


As far as the bottom picture with the rubber plug in the firewall hole - if we knew what options and accessories your car originally we might be able to figure it out with those to guide us

There was recent discussion on the Boss302  & 428cj forums in regards to the hole to the left of "11" & above "3" being the location of the choke cable.:

Thanks Jeff I know the details can be important I definetly have no idea of the details in the first two so they probably make things worse as far as information.  I was more or less happy to find something close enough to show people where on the firewall I was taking my picture for since it is hard to describe.

Mike thanks for the links will look at them in the morning.

I will also link up all the details from my marti report in the morning.  Its the only thing I have to go on for options and dates.

Lastly Jeff, saac 39 was bit farther away than the the Glen was (the glen 30 minutes from my house) but I really missed watching you guys judge the 66 Shelby's this year.  I hope there were some good cars this year.

As mentioned the second one appears to be from a Boss or CJ car so extra holes will just confuse you

Thanks that should help - as there appears to be a few differences between what holes are used or installed depending on these things

I handed off the 66's to John Brown and the rest of the team this year to focus on a Div 1 car and help out judging a few others with Mr Gaines :).   Guess I played clean -up position this year :)

hole above #3 is screw hole for 69 throttle cable & 70 cable has square hole & no screw hole as cable just snaps in place.

Thanks specialed but that's not the hole I mean that is to little and to low. 

Mike that hole for the choke on those cars looks to small to be this one I have, not that someone couldn't have hogged it out.

Mid year, 351 4V, Auto, no AC, with PS, P/disc  and a non- Calif sent car.

Ok now we can get to work

The rubber plug you have appears to be a buckhead plug that seals and holds a pair of rubber vacuum lines that pass through the firewall at that location

like this example




On other cars it simply had a rubber plug installed

Believe this is part of /related to the Dist-O-Vac system installed on M code automatics

Thanks Jeff you are a genius that's what it has to be.  I assume it is empty because one of the following reasons, it is now a c6, has petronix, and a Holley 600 electric choke carb?  This all started because I was looking for a hole to run a wire to the coil for an aftermarket steering wheel tach.  Just so happened to find that nice little "buckhead" plug as you call it!  Then it made me nervous that it was too perfect and still open and not sealed.

Please do tell when the 70 library will be online!  I know my car is not a concours car nor do I want it to be (read I can't afford it) but I want to know why it is or isn't and be knowledgeable.  I cant seem to get near a a judged MCA event since I got the car (read even more 2 kids under 5 and car seats) so right now I am not assuming anything.  I have so many questions that would be answered somewhat easily by actually looking over a similar car that I have been holding off.

Anything based on the above marti information that is crazy unique for these metuchen cars mid year that I should look for?  The car has been restored and restored pretty well but I am still sorting out what was original and put back on versus aftermarket replacements.  One part at a time I will figure it out.

Sorry Scott I got both pics from the thread below on VMF.  The original poster of the pic says it is an original red 70 C/J but I dont think it was his car nor does he know where.  It is also where I posted the picture of my question thinking they might know.  I ended up bringing it here, I am going to put an update to this link now becasue no one knew over there.  Just so plant/year/engine/tranny specific and so much crazy info out there.

The reason that I was asking, that the photo could also have been a 1970 Cougar. I know the other posters were seeing the reinforced or wrap around shock towers and were thinking big block Mustang. All 1969/70 Cougars received the reinforced shock towers.
