Topic: What is Correct 69 Coupe Rear Window Molding Color?

Hi,

I have a 1969 Mustang Coupe that I purchased from the original owner back in 1989 and subsequently had it repainted in the summer of 1989. It is Gulfstream Aqua and is an early build with a 302-2v, A/C, P/S, C4 and standard black interior.

It was involved in an accident last year and I am having the whole car repainted. I would swear that when I bought the car in 1989 that the textured molding piece that goes around the rear window area was body color or something close to it and the car had not been repainted. When I had it sprayed in 1989, I told the guy to paint it body color but I want to confirm that that is the correct color to paint it as opposed to black.

That being said, what is the correct color that the molding should be painted?

I hope you get an authoritative answer to your question.  My answer is based mostly on observation.  I believe that vinyl top cars got the black molding.  This is consistent with the listing in the 1975 MPC, which calls for black with vinyl.  I also believe that cars without vinyl tops had the gray moldings, regardless of paint color.  This is not consistent with the MPC, but I only have the 1975 version and it would be interesting to see what is listed in a 1969 or 1970 year specific parts book.

The 1975 MPC says these moldings are available in black for vinyl top cars and in white "paint to match".  I assume they mean paint to match body color but, again, I don't believe this was done originally.  I purchased some parts off an extremely lo mile original paint coupe that was new lime in color and no options, no vinyl top, and the moldings were the gray color.  I have yet to see a "for sure" original paint coupe with moldings painted body color.

I own an unrestored original paint 1969 Mustang coupe "without a vinyl top" that has the black rear window trim. This trim is not painted body color.

Thanks for the replies! I found a thread discussing the color of black to use. I am quoting a response from PPG below to the OP in the other thread. Does PPG 9295 sound right?

I would be happy to join the MCA to get access to the concourse rules if I knew the paint information was there.

The formula for 9295 , has some blue , so you could assume , the blue faded less than the black , so that is what you're seeing. I think you're safe
with 9295. ( a backlight is the rear window , a glass shop will confirm)

9295 is the same paint as used on the Mach I and Boss 302 hood treatment that year. I seen nothing listed on the Paint color chip pages

Thank you so much for the pictures. Do you know what the proper paint code is for the molding? I am not sure if it is semi-gloss, flat, etc. Obviously the Mach 1/Boss 302 paint (PPG/Ditzler 9295) is flat but I don't know if that is right for this piece.

I received an email from Bob Perkins saying that the finish is semi-gloss but he didn't have a paint code/formula. Getting closer!

Received another email from Bob stating it is a "dark charcoal metallic." Some searches pulled up references to charcoal black metallic on forums for interior painting of lower dash area.

Dark Charcoal metallic is what Ford used on painted surfaces in the interior of cars labeled "black" during the late 60's - into the 70's

If your following Bob's recommendation then no - its Dark Charcoal Metallic not semi-gloss black

Though it will not likely help much but the original PPG code fro that color is ...... If you want you can try Auto Color Library (TCP Global) and they likely have a new formula mix available if you want to shot the color. Since you've read the other threads related to using this paint - follow the suggestions as to prep and base coating offered there

I apologize for being so dense and running in circles. Regarding the dark charcoal metallic, the paint prep I saw in another thread was black epoxy primer with PPG # 32586 (dark charcoal metallic) sprayed over that. This is definitely not black but hard to tell how dark it might look or could be depending on how the painter does his work.

If its shot right - the color looks to be a slightly gray semi-gloss black to me. Metallic is very fine

I have two coupes, one being restored and one unrestored. Both are dearborn cars and both are gray metallic and look very close to the 70 Mach gray used on the lower trim grille etc. One car is winter blue and one is Wimbledon white.
