70 Boss 302 side stripe location.
« on: May 15, 2014, 12:57:11 PM »
Just getting ready to stripe my 70 metuchen car and was wondering if there are any exact dimensions for locating the side stripes.  I have looked at many cars and the placement seems to vary.  Does the lower pin stripe sit on the lower body line, just above? is there a dimension to go buy?

The first thing before installing the stripes is that you are satisfied with all of the panel fit because no more adjustments can be made after the stripes are installed. The first panel to start with is the hood and that will set the alignment of the rest of the stripes by just matching them up to the adjacent panel and keeping them level. The hood black out measurement and stripe position is published and should be inside the box for the stripes but should be easily found if not. I put all the stripes on wet and use a special solution that is made for installing decals that is available through an auto paint store or online. You can use warm soapy water but I feel you get less water trapping under the decal with a product made for this.

thanks Chris. Panel alignment is great. the car has been color sanded and is ready to stripe.  I have the drawing for the hood measurements as well as a stencil.  My intention is to stripe the car and come back and paint the hood to ensure a good alignment with the stripes at rear of hood.   I agree with every thing you suggested however, once you go over the top edge of the front fender you can end up with quite a bit of variation on the height location of the decal.  Like I said I looked at 10 different cars at the 50th in Charlotte a couple weeks ago and none were the same.  The best looking to me is leaving a gap of body color the same thickness as the pin stripe between the lower body line and the bottom of the pin stripe.  Thanks again.
