1967 GT500 Glass Question - Sun X or Clear ??
« on: May 13, 2014, 12:12:24 AM »
Anyone know if the Non-A/C cars came with tinted (Sun-X) glass or clear ? It is not denoted on my Marti report or anywhere else I can locate. Any idea on how to verify or were they all clear glass with the exception of AC cars ?

Also, any good contacts on replacement glass or anyone that is able to re-etch the Carlite logo or date code info, mine seems to have faded considerably. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

I also asked this question over on the Shelby Forums so please excuse the double post but I'm looking to get an answer as quick as possible.

On a Shelby it was ether clear (non A/C car) or tinted (A/C car). On a regular Mustang the tinted glass could be a option on a non air car.

I read somewhere fastback rear screens were all sun-x, but the other glass remains clear. is there any truth in that?

Thanks Bob for your quick and experienced response, I appreciate the help.  Any truth to the idea that FB's all had Sun-X on the rear glass ? or is that just a myth ?

I think Bob or Jeff would be best to reference regarding that question.  I've heard it too but I think it just may be a myth.

Ok - went out and checked a half dozen non- ac 67 fastbacks today - and found only Sun X marked rear windows.   All had dates that related well IMHO to their projected build dates

Jeff,

Thanks for jumping into the conversation and dispelling the myth of the non-a/c sun-x rear glass.

Could you verify that the door, vent and windshield would all be clear in a non-a/c car or one without the tint option with the exception of a light band at the top of the windshield ?  Also, would the date code on the all the windows pre-date the build date of the car by one month?, two months?, the same month ??

Thanks for the assistance, it is greatly appreciated.

Jim

Not sure of the "myth"   all I can confirm is that all non-AC 67 Fastbacks I found today that had what appears to be original rear glass were tinted and marked Sun X on the glass. Believe we will find them all that way

Not going to have access to those cars for a while - will check when I get a chance :)

From my records - not allot of examples. Span between projected build date and glass date at San Jose during 66 & 67 appears to be 3 weeks to 4 months typically

Rear glass tinted in a 67 Shelby . I have never seen a clear rear glass in ether Shelby or Mustang. On a Shelby if a clear windshield all other glass clear (except rear). If tinted windshield all other glass was tinted. I assume reg Mustang followed suit.

Jeff,

Thanks once again for your help and input, I truly appreciate it.  Please let me know what you find when you have access to those cars again and get an opportunity to inspect similar Shelby's.  I'll also report back my findings if I'm afforded the opportunity to inspect some original cars.

Thanks, Jim

+1 and yes Mustang/Shelby the same. Only difference is Mustang could be ordered with tinted glass in non ac application but would be noted on Marti

As a side note: On 'Regular' Mustang A/C cars tinted glass was 'Recommended', but Not Mandatory. This might not necessarily be the case on Shelby. Have had plenty of A/C cars with clear glass and plenty of Non-A/C cars with SUN-X. .

All Mustang Fastbacks had SUN-X Rear Glass. This was due to the large area of glass in the back and Ford deemed it mandatory that all Fastbacks had tinted rear windows, and I do not believe Shelby would have been an exception to that rule. You won't find an Original Clear Fastback rear window.

I wouldn't have mentioned it if the topic hadn't strayed from Shelby specific, but I see a lot of internet chat(not just here) that groups A/C cars with tinted glass. Last time I had this conversation with anyone, probably a year or so ago, I actually had a factory A/C car in the shop at that time and it still had all factory date coded glass that was Clear, Not Sun-X(have had others with that configuration). IIRC, someone mentioned that it stemmed from period sales literature and/or dealer order forms strongly recommending Sun-X when ordering A/C, but I do not believe that the wording was 'Mandatory'. Just wanted to put MHO out there. Andrew
