Jeff:
The build date for the car was Nov. 18, 1968 and the engine the 26th of October if I remember right.

Brian:
I'm in Anchorage for the next few weeks but I'll have Mike look at my covers and let you know, possibly post a flick. My filler cap is Chrome, the elbow plastic, both came with the car.

          Jim

Thanks Jim.  Looks like; Nov. 1968 chrome and plastic.  Valve covers dated 10 3 D3 and ? 12 D2.  Emissions decal; 650 rpm for autos and 700 rpm for manuals and most likely the C8OE-9C485-C emissions decal.                                              Thank you Mike for the photos.  Brian

Brian,
I'm not at the garage but I believe the number on the second valve cover was a 9... 9 12 D2. I can check next time I'm there if you need it.

Jeff- The car and all the pictures I posted are of Jim's mustang. He's the original owner. I have access to his garage and was able to take the photos for him. If anyone would know the build dates it's him.

Here you go Brian. The stamping isn't very deep but the first number is clearly a 9.

Thanks for the follow through Mike.  That 9 12 date puts the chrome valve cover at 6 weeks before the assembly date.  Pretty large window if your looking for date correct valve covers for an early Metuchen car.  Very interesting about the service decal location as Jeff noted.  I can't recall seeing one there before.  Thanks again for all the effort.  Brian

I know we don't see many cars with the decal in that location but I do remember when I picked my car up the dealer had four on the lot and the sticker was in the same place on all four. Also I rarely see them in that location anymore along with date stamps.

My car is an early car and yes there seems to be a little skepticism about a few of its OE features.  I am not the original owner but am fortunate to have the build sheet and it helps to fill in some of the blanks or questions I might have.  I figured the early chrome covers came with dates, but know way to verify that, and thanks for sharing.  My Metuchen car's block was cast 8/17/68 and assembled 8/27/68. The car was ordered 9/4/68, built 9/19/68 and sold 9/27/68.  So it seems they had a pretty fast turn around.  I do have other questions concerning OE early Metuchen 69's and am glad you decided to jump in and share some of that info about the decal and valve covers.  Thanks again; Jim and Mike.  Brian

Brian: My car is not an SCJ, just a CJ, was not aware of the option when ordering long distance. I was in the Marines at the time and literally bought the car based on pictures and wanting a new car when I got home. On the other hand, every harness in the car is original and never been removed.

I did some editing of my last post.  My car is in remarkable mostly original condition and nice to know there is another one out there to compare notes with.  Brian

Anytime, and feel free to call or ask for flicks. When I'm on the road there is a real good chance Mike can go to the house and get any info as well. His car is actually in my garage getting ready for a motor & Tranny install. When I bought the car I never thought I'd still have it after all this time.
