Dearborn radiator grease pencil markings

I have noted on some radiators on 69-70 mustangs (maybe others) have a grease pencil marking of a number on the top of the tank. I have often seen the #3 and wondered if this is to alert a line worker how many cores the radiator has or is it just a convenient place for an inspector to put his mark on something? Is this a certain plant thing? The car I am looking to see if it should have this is a 10/68 Dearborn 428 CJ auto, a/c car

Seen that on restored cars but not personally on any original cars. Is that we're your seeing them also?


 Wonder if one or two have been found with it - only to be copied and recopied like so many other details once pictures get in magazines or cars seen at shows. That's my guess  - sort of like the X's and the PAINT OK's we see on so many "restored" efforts

Could see where possibly a Boss 9 might have a marking so that the radiator got back into the eight car like so many other parts that were removed at the conversion plant

Looking at pictures of low mileage cars as you listed I don't see any examples of writing on the top radiator tank. If it wasn't there on your your better off IMHO not adding it. Especially since you would then be responsible for every person whop saw your car and copied it ;)

Jeff, I can't say for sure but most likely the markings I saw are on restored cars. I agree with you I would never want to do a copy cat marking from other restored cars without knowing that it's correct for my car as you do see a lot of that out there.   Chris

I have only seen the markings on LH flat inside top by shroud never on flat top of tanks.

What cars Ed?    Was it Dearborn or just Boss 9's ?   A bunch or a couple?   ;)

OK, not all that relevant maybe, but this is a CJ Torino, plant of manufacture unknown, but the number must not relate to the number of rows in the radiator because this one is a "2" and CJ's have 3-row cores.

 yes jim from what I seen on 4-speed had a x like check mark & auto would be different & torino rad c8oe is taller

  I couldn't find the original post on this topic. I'm sure Jeff can move it to correct category. The first photo is 1967 289 4V with air common Metuchen 21L Build date, second photo is 1969 351W Dearborn June 7 build date, the third photo is 1971 Boss 351 01/71 build date.
