My question was just to confirm what I had read on this site and what I had researched before. The Mustang would have the exterior color applied, then later, the body was masked off in order to apply the firewall black out. It apparently was not uncommon for the body color to extend way up to the shock tower area. What Charles is saying is that this plant at least, Dearborn, would not always cover every inch of the exterior color "overspray" with the black. In this case, he reproduced this with the white not being covered around the shock tower and back to the firewall / toe board area. This area would later get sound deadener applied once the car was assembled (fenders attached). This is something I would also like to recreate on my recently finished June 64 Dearborn coupe. I too would like to see how he finishes this area?? Any chance on getting some more pics Charles?? And where do you purchase your sound deadener/undercoating??

When you say firewall black out, do you mean the whole engine compartment and inside and outside the inner fenders?

I guess I had it backwards, looking at pictures of the outside of inner fenders, I thought there was body color over spray over the black, not black overspray over the body color. Learn something  every day, lol.

At all of the plants the firewall section between the inner fenders was normally covered with black - after the body color was applied. This was the area that was going to be seen by the customer at some point so it was more important to have covered I would guess. The firewall/foot area out side of the inner fenders (in the front wheel wells) was treated differently depending on year and plant. At Dearborn typically that meant no or little attempt to cover the body color and or primer from the shock tower rearward with the black paint during engine compartment spray process

Great info, Jeff, Thanks. Just to be sure I'm understanding this correctly, the outer inner fender's black was painted after body color?

And after the fender was installed, along with the two per side splash shields but before wheels were put on.

Not that I've ever seen at any plant. Maybe your thinking of sound deadener ???

Nope, the shield that goes over the back of the headlight bucket and at the rear inside of the fender on both sides. They have a rubber/fiber material that fills the gap to the fender. The rubber material is held on with 0.047in dia staples (I measured several originals). These are sprayed with sound deadener.

Guess this is where I lost you - What does the splash shields have to do with "outer inner fender's black was painted after body color"?

Not sure (without check pictures) if Dearborn always (or meant to always) spray the splash shields with some sound deadener. They didn't often at San Jose. Not all- some IMHO

Use to think the same thing till we got allot of additional examples

Now back on thread :)

OK, mine is a 66 San Jose car, but it clearly has something sprayed on the inside of the fender, the splash shield (p/ns C4ZB-16A562,3 & C4ZB-16B568,9 plus appropriate weatherstrips), headlight bucket and the outer side of the fender apron. It overlapped to the fender on all four splash shields. You can see overspray on the outer bumper arm as well. This is a "before" picture when I was replacing the front suspension.

Jeff, It appears that your picture is of a 66, based on the disc lockwasher shown on the three 5/16-18 bolts.
