Early 64.5 Dearborn front inner fender area

Going through some pics, found one that is a decent example of how Dearborn typically detailed the outer front inner fender area.  Just for future reference in case anyone is looking.  This is a 29D scheduled date pace car coupe that I just finished restoring (well, almost!)

Is the base color of the car white? Mine came out of ND and had allot of old under coating but found signs of what might have been a gray base coat on the bottom.

Yes, its a pace car coupe.

The area would be covered in sound deadener/sealant after the fenders and front end were installed.  This is how it would look before that was done.

I  was curious to know if you painted the firewall after or before the exterior color? It looks like you have white overspray over the black of the firewall, which would mean it was done in reverse. This was the way I restored my June 64 1/2 coupe but have since learned that the firewall was painted after the exterior color was applied leaving black overspray over the exterior paint on the firewall. Looks good either way. What kind of sound deadener will you use? I have a nice undercoating gun and would like to reproduce this detail now that the car is assembled. Thanks!

Looks good - but does the wife know you've using her dish towels to insulate the jack stand from the body of the car ;)

The black was done after the white, but it was typical for there to not be much black except in the front area on Dearborn cars.  Of course, this could vary from car to car and week to week.  The main thing that I was trying to share was the liberal amount of body color in this area that is typical of Dearborn assy plant.

that cloth/rag looks awefully familiar to me. sure it wasn't used by your foreign workers/tourists recently to dry themselves after a hard days work on the pace car restoration.

What do you mean by firewall black?  This is a representation of how Dearborn finished out this area.  My understanding is they did not make much attempt to cover over body color over-spray in the outer inner fenders... the reasoning being that the metal was coated, so why put more paint on?  The area was blacked out with sound deadener after the front sheet metal installed, so most body color was covered anyway.

I'm just trying to figure this out. In the picture it looks like the black was painted on the outside of the inner fenders, then covered in body color overspray. Which would match what I thought, that the body color was the last to go on? Is that  incorrect?

  My question was just to confirm what I had read on this site and what I had researched before. The Mustang would have the exterior color applied, then later, the body was masked off in order to apply the firewall black out. It apparently was not uncommon for the body color to extend way up to the shock tower area. What Charles is saying is that this plant at least, Dearborn, would not always cover every inch of the exterior color "overspray" with the black. In this case, he reproduced this with the white not being covered around the shock tower and back to the firewall / toe board area. This area would later get sound deadener applied once the car was assembled (fenders attached). This is something I would also like to recreate on my recently finished June 64 Dearborn coupe. I too would like to see how he finishes this area?? Any chance on getting some more pics Charles?? And where do you purchase your sound deadener/undercoating??

The car is assembled, but some things left to do like apply sound deadener in front wheel wells.  I'll do that sometime and post some pics.

I think my body guy is using the Lord Fusor or Wurth seam sealers/sound deadener products.  I would have to ask him.  He still does not have a repeatable process, seems to experiment with different materials and application.
