Topic: axle housing machined surface

I've searched through posts and found discussion and pictures on the machined surfaces and finish of the removeable carrier.  My question is on the housing itself, specifically 8" for a 67.  Is the surface where the studs penetrate and the carrier bolts to supposed to be painted along with the axle, or left bare due to machining?  I can see swirl marks from machining, but of course it could have been painted after that process.
