Fuse box to shift indicator & console feed
« on: April 12, 2014, 07:42:23 PM »
Does anyone know if Alloy Metal Products is making the feeds between the fise box & the console and/or shift indicator? I do know they make the harness which attaches to the console itself, but of the 180+ harnesses they sell, I don't see that they offer the harness between the console and the fuse box.

Angela:
The shifter lamp (PRNDL) gets signal from a female bullet connector near the fuse box that is a blue/red wire.  The console subharness plugs into the green/yellow and blue/black female bullet connectors just short of the fuse box as well.  Neither harness directly connects to the fuse box.  I believe both subharnesses are reproduced.  If not, I know I have console harnesses and I may have a PRDNL harness.

Thanks, yes, I agree, they don't directly plug into the fuse box, but lacking a picture that was the best way I could think of to describe where these harnesses connect. Perhaps I should have said that they plug into the underdash harness *very close* to the fuse box :-)

If these two harnesses are reproduced, I cannot find them listed by Alloy Metal. I have both of these original harnesses and both could likely be reused. I'm also reluctant to use a 50yr old wire, however, especially when the wire routes underneath the carpet. In, short, I fear a short..er, fire. I thought I'd check and see if anyone had purchased either of these harnesses from Alloy before I reluctantly go down the path of reusing the originals.

My NPD catalog lists those console harnesses, but I do not know if they are made by Alloy Metal.

As for your originals, if they are in good shape with no broken or brittle insulation and good bullets, they should work just fine.

Interesting, can you share the NPD pg or PN? I only see the harness which physically routes within (underneath) the console; I do not see NPD listing the harness that routes between the console and the underdash harness.

In case it might help someone else in the future.... NPD pg. 185: "13712-3A, 67/68 feed to under dash harness" is NOT the wiring harness that connects the underdash wiring to the console wiring. Rather, it's the console wiring harness itself. I actually ordered it twice, the first time they thought they had sent an incorrectly labeled package.... both packages arrived with the same PN and include the console wiring harness. Ugh. This stupid dash-to-console harness is a tough one to find.

IMHO, If your harnesses are in good (not stiff, corroded, broken terminals etc.) and all insulation is secure, I agree with the Pink Flamingo, (Midlife)...Reuse one of your originals. There is a fuse that would always protect you against any fire threat as well as the main fusable link at the battery. The originals are not even remotely exposed to moisture, heat or sunlight that could possibly deteriorate them in any way, shape or form. A simple inspection could prove them rock solid and safe for at least another 50+ years. Seems like an unneeded frustration to keep hunting for the NEW reproduced wiring with a yet to be proved track record of possibly less quality, maybe equal to quality, yet alone the remote chance of it actually being better than the quality of an original one (in good condition).
