Another blacked out top steering box.  The pace car coupe I'm assembling also had a blacked out top.  It has a different lock ring, cast part instead of stamped, kind of a pain to get it tight.

  How would the "black out " be applied and when?? With the steering box in the car or when the box was completed from the assembly plant?? Curious as it looks like it is also all over the side facing the engine.

Interesting question. At first I thought the black was just some rattle can someone used to dress up the engine compartment. In fact the column housing in the engine compartment is black also. (blue interior and blue column inside). Anyway the black on the cap seems to be better quality and too thick to be spray can in my experience. Car had 37000 miles and motor was standard bore so I do not think it had been out before.

You might have both things going on in your compartment - original brush on and PO rattle can.

So are you say the box and column should be black on a 64.5?

no. the exposed column in the engine compartment is the same color as the interior of the car. the top of the box may be blacked out depending on production date/plant.
