Topic: 70 Dearborn Inspection Decal placement

Hi everyone,

So I just received a set of the paint OK decals that go on the firewall in the engine compartment. Does anyone have an approximate estimation of where these were placed...or was it sort of random?

I have a 302 in the car (not sure if ti makes any difference).

what year ?  what plant?? build date? this info is necessary to properly address your question.

1970...dearborn plant...Final assembly date December 31, 1969.

I am fairly sure somebody can and will answer your question eventually. (or already has in another thread) Bringing it up again might help, but bringing it up again next week might help even more. One thing that usually troubles me when I have such a question is waiting for the person or persons who know the RIGHT answer to become aware of the question. Be patient, look around in other threads in the meantime and maybe you will get your answer soon. Keep in mind that MANY people have been gearing up to go off to the Anniversary celebrations in Charlotte and Vegas. It might still be a week or so till the best answer comes through. Maybe GO to Charlotte or Vegas and look at some of the other Mustangs in original condition, ask questions THERE. Be aware about the build date and assembly plant info on any car you see. Ask and CONFIRM that whatever you consider doing is right for your build info before sticking stickers everywhere. (like a 5 year old might do to their bedroom walls!)

They are more than "paint OK" stickers but like the 64-66 Dearborn cars are related to many more inspections and checks done on those cars.

The challenge is that since they were just paper they didn't hold up well and even very nice original cars we see today have had them replaced with reproductions   Believe me I've asked allot of original car owners only to have that little detail confirmed since they normally know I use pictures of these details to help guide others and they would rather confess than have the possibly incorrect information taint the information pool

So original cars to guide us what each were is very difficult IMHO

Thankfully, I was able to get the ones with the sharp corners and not the rounded ones (CJ pony parts treats me very well...they know what I need and understand that I only want MCA approved parts)...had a blast at Fabulous Fords forever and saw a 70 grabber mustang fastback that was featured in mustangs monthly...all stock and no modification made at all (still had the paper vapor hose)...it was built at the San Jose plant and was sold on September 13, 1970. They have all the documents with the car (even the build sheet and original warranty and price sheet...just amazing and very humbling...thought I was a fanatic...nope...the put me in my place). He also did not have the paint stickers (they must have worn off).

Just need to mention that there is no such thing as MCA approved parts. That was a program that ended badly IMHO over 15 years ago (thing its been that long) So anyone using it to sell parts should stop IMO - its just misleading and incorrect

Back to your original question - I keep coming up with Ink stamps replacing some of the stickers/decals during your cars period. Not allot of original cars with visible markings on those stickers - still looking

Well, if they are ink stamps...then I guess I am not sure what to do. Like I said in another post on a different topic (good picture of 302-2v from san jose), I saw a grabber mustang at the fabulous fords forever show and did not see the stickers. So I guess it is anyones guess of where they go.

Since you mentioned it was built in San Jose it would not have had any originally. San Jose didn't mark their cars that way for all the different inspections

Can offer the following

Often find a black "P" in the drivers side door jamb above the door switch

You often see (your choice to follow) owners place the black "E" on top of the drivers side shock tower

Been a little busy lately Only two weeks till SAAC 39 and everyone is calling and asking questions. Sort of like the weeks leading up to the 50th - plus a bunch of vehicle inspections around the country to do.

Wait...my car was not built in San Jose. It was built in Dearborn Michigain (all the 70 convertibles were...at least so I was told)...the car I saw was built in San jose...but thanks for the suggestions.

I took it that you were referring to this Grabber and was responding to that comment.

Yes...the Grabber was built at San Jose. Sorry for the confusion.

Here some pictures of an unrestored Dearborn 1970 R code Mach 1.  Not sure of the build date.  You can see the B on the drivers side cowl, and the E on the top of the drivers side shock tower.  You can also a sticker on the passenger side cowl but can't see what letter.  On my car, I put the T there and the F on the front face of the drivers side shock tower, near the top.  As Jeff mentioned, the P is on the front of the drivers door above the top hinge.  Hope this helps.
