65 Dearborn rearend paint

I have done some searching and looked in the library section with no luck. My rear diff (3rd member?) has been painted black at some point. I noticed in all pics these are RED. Is this the case for all the rear ends for Dearborn cars of 1965?
And, what is the color red that was used?

yes. the bare casting was dipped in red primer, then machined in appropriate areas, then assembled. sorry i don't have a paint code handy.

I've used Eastwood's Red Oxide Primer and couldn't tell the difference between the original and Eastwood Primer...that was 14 years ago however; hopefully their color is still the same.

If its a true primer then it shouldn't hold up well to the elements - how has it done?

The color I've always seen on original rearends (inside and out applied prior to machining) was a fairly glossy finish - most likely an epoxy base to make it a sealer rather than a primer

I use a red oxide primer followed by a satin clear.  Works well :)

Recently painted one of these.  Was going to just use DP74LF epoxy primer with reducer added to give it a bit of sheen.  It came out way too orange in my opinion.  I remembered I had some paint from when I was matching drum brake springs and found one that seemed to be a good match to the rear.  It's for the little short spring that attaches to the parking brake equalizer bracket between the shoes.

Will post some pics after I get the diff back this weekend.  My paint is an acrylic enamel, so it's a proper topcoat, with hardener.  I did add a bit of flattening agent so it wouldn't be glossy.  Turned out really nice IMHO.  :-)
