Fuel Line Clamps - 68 NJ

Fuel Line Clamps on a 68, are they suppose to be zinc or a dull looking silver?

For Methchen 68, I have seen a few originals that are very dark (spring steel dark), but most seem to be zinc. Make sure the spring tips are square and not rounded.

I think mine were the dark looking color. Almost like a flat black. How would you simulate that?

Just removed mine from my 68 June Metuchen and the back side of one was clearly zinc dichromate.  This surprised me because the others were probably zinc from what I can tell.   

I'm referring to the clamps on the underside of the car.

Most likely a anomaly. Zinc is the normal.

Also have a bunch of NOS ones that are silver painted

I would have to agree the finish seems more like paint than plating. I have only seen the Whittek clamps used at the center fuel line splice. May be the other were replaced with the spring clamps?

I have already bought several (6) of the pinch style silver zinc clamps for use throughout the 3 locations of my '67 SJ, (Repops from NPD, which btw generally TRIES to be correct) and haven't really been able to confirm they are truly correct style yet and this thread caused an interest in me because I am not really sure. I know that 68's were more than likely different, and given that it is another assembly plant...I feel confident in saying what the O.P. is asking has nothing to do with my particular car. Yet it beggs the question.

Going by memory of Ford cars in general... and beginning my sample search of the 60's year model Fords circa 1974 (intended to read that not necessarily ORIGINAL equipment) , I seem to remember that several model Ford cars have one style on the engine (filter) and another style elsewhere (fuel pump and/or tank), so in my opinion, it is also possible that SOME vehicles may require more than one style to be "correct".

I thought this might add to the topic, if not, maybe move it to begin a new thread.


You might want to start a new threat focused on your need and year - As the wording of this post might not be the best first post of a new thread ;)

Have tons of original car pictures of this detail once you get it going

+1 paint on pinch style clamps. You wouldn't be able to scrape off plating as easily as can if try on the finish of the original silver pinch clamps.

Marty I will admit I dont have many references to Dearborn cars but NJ and SJ I have tons of references and i would say #2 Whiteks were used through Feb/March and after that the used spring style at the fuel rail.

Never looked at the detail and tried to figure out the time span for usage at San Jose but a quick look at my pictures suggest a much larger application period for 68 at San Jose.


Have pictures of Whiteks being originally installed as early as 8R11687x (approx Dec 67) and all the way till 8R1606xx (May 14th 67 car) Had one spring clamp car show up at 8R01C15044x

Not suggesting that their application stopped there just that is where the reference pictures ended.

I would agree. I think last NJ car I've seen was somewhere around end of Feb
 I saw a SJ car built in late March that had Whiteks
