Topic: 1964 1/2 - 65 window crank springs / flat plastic wahsers install??

  Just put new door panels on the 64 1/2 and was wanting to make sure I put the correct window crank springs with the correct handle/crank and have them positioned the correct way. I have 4 springs, two much more stiff then the other 2. I am guessing that the stiffer springs go with the large plastic flat type washers for use with the window crank. The less stiff springs go with the door release??? Can someone verify?? Also, since the springs are cone shaped would the larger part go against the crank or the larger side go against the door panel??? Any pics or diagrams would be awesome! Thanks!!

Larger side of the spring goes against the door panel-spreads out the load--not sure about the other parts of your question.

 I'm pretty sure the flat white plastic washer goes against the door panel first so not to rub or mess up the door panel material??? Not sure if the door release had a white plastic washer behind it or not. It's been several years since I removed them. I have another pair from a donor car that could be used. Again, any input from folks would be well accepted at this point. Once I place the handles on I don't want to take them off!!

The springs go behind the door panel... not sure if that is the issue here?  I would think the bigger spring goes behind the door panel at the window regulator and smaller on behind for the door handle pull.

 Thanks again Caspian and Ron. That picture makes more sense. Not really sure why they were really used?? I did not replace these on my 66' and have not had any issues, thou I did reuse the nylon washer so not to mess up the door panel. Guess the keep tension against the handles so they don't feel loose? I will get some pics of my originals tonight, hopefully this will help others searching this topic. And by the way, the two "heavier, stiffer" springs that I too believe go on the window crank are painted black while the two "less stiff" springs have surface rust... These are original to the car as the door panels looked to have never been off.

I believe they are used for 2 reasons... to keep cold air coming through the door panel and also for aesthetics (minimize gap).  The repro panels are usually a little thicker than original, so this might be why folks don't notice a gap.  Or, maybe they do and think it's normal?

Well I will definitely be putting these back in place . Here is a pic of the springs and nylon washers. I only had two but will be using four for all the cranks. The springs on the left should be for the window cranks. Although hard to see they are painted black while the others for the door release were no doubt natural and now have "rust dust".

Have any of you seen these springs behind the Deluxe Interior door panels for the Deluxe door handles?  The assembly manual
does not show them and I am just curious as to what others have found.

I didn't find any springs, and I don't think I have ever had the door panels off.  But if I ever did , I always try to return things back to the way I found them.  June 65 FB with Deluxe Interior.

On a deluxe door panel the only spring used is for the window handle, not for the door handle, in fact a spring will not work there. There is the large diameter plastic washer used for the window handle, same as the standard door and HT/Conv rear quarter windows.
I believe there is an earlier type washer with a "lip" on the edge of the hole, I don't know usage dates or applications.
