Radio knobs issue
« on: March 10, 2014, 06:33:40 AM »
I have found a genuine radio for my 66 without knobs. I have new Scott Drake knobs which have a small shaft coming out of both of them. However only the tuning side of the radio has a slot for a shaft. The on/off side switch has a shaft coming out of it as well so the Scott Drake knob won't fit on. They are correct knobs for a 64-66 Mustang Radio and the radio is correct. Does anyone know if the shaft on the Scott Drake knobs is removable?

Are you saying your radio has shafts sticking out of it where the outer knobs should push in?  If so, just pull the ones out of the radio with some pliers.  Best to post a pic before you do anything to make sure it's understood what you're asking.

Maybe no bearing on the knob issue but does the tuner begin with a 5 or 6?

Tuning begins with a 6. It is a 5TMZ radio. I will post a pic soon.

Some pics of the radio below. It only has the one shaft sticking out of the left side. Can this be removed to fit the outer knob that also has a shaft?

I see two different colored metals at the tip of the left shaft.  Could it be that a knob half shaft broke off in the radio?

My guess is a different type of radio knob was used.  Just get a pair of pliers and pull the brass looking stud out.  Then you can use the correct style knob.

Your radio dial starts with a "6" which is generally what was used on 64 1/2 and 65's
66 radio dials start with a "5".  This has been my understanding on how they were.

This is a Motorola radio used in 1965 only.

64½ radios were Bendix. IMHO :-)

The tricky ones are the Philcos that can be either 5TPZ (later 65) or 6TPZ and IIRC all have a 5 (five) as first digit. (sorry wrote 6 at first ...)

Thanks for the reply. The stud is not coming out as easy as I thought. Do I need to loosen anything before pulling it out or should it come out with brute force.

It shouldn't be there, so not sure what is going on.  It should look like the other side.  Maybe the unit was worked on or modifed in the past?

The switch appears to have been replaced with a switch from a different radio; the shaft has a flat side referred to as a 'D' Shaft. Don't try to forcibly remove it, more damage could result. If you have no luck figuring it out and don't have a local repair shop to take it to, I'd be glad to look at it for you, no charge. If so, just send me a PM and I will give you my information.

All the best.

Thanks for the offer Ray but I am in Australia, I do appreciate it though. I stopped trying to remove it after the first attempt. I am thinking that it may be easier to remove the shaft from the Scott Drake knob instead.
