1964 1/2 vinyl covering install for interior rocker panel
« on: March 06, 2014, 11:46:01 AM »
So I'm nearing carpet installation and I am now wondering exactly how the vinyl covering is used over the inner rocker panel area?? How far does it go under the back panel and front kick panel?? Also, how far does it go under the carpet? What is used to retain it, weatherstrip adhesive??? This is a June 1964 Dearborn car with black standard interior. I purchased the car and the carpet had already been replaced with the 65-66 style. Any pictures of a factory correct installation would be greatly appreciated!!!! :)

The vinyl on the side rocker is even with top of it.The scuff plate covers it and on the floor under carpet is about 2-3 inches long on floor. The material goes back just past the sheetmetal point behind door and about the same on front kick panel area.If carpet don't have a finished edge will make no difference as all that will be not seen but sounds like your trying to do it correct. The material is held on with headliner adhesive as I use a spray gun....Hope this helps

Here's what I removed from my June '64 coupe. I believe it to be original but I guess I can't swear to it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the responses. Kutzoh, does it look like the vinyl was rolled over the top rocker edge or cut?? I see it looks like the material starts to follow up the front edge up, where the kick panel is. I'm also noticing relief cuts around the seat platform. Guess they were trying to get these wrinkle free???   I could understand why Iscman says it is even with the top of the rocker as that makes sense too??? Just aiming to be precise. ;)

Yellow glue is what I have normally seen used to stick these on.  The spray contact adhesive would work well.  Or, brushed on neoprene adhesive.

Greg,

Could you give me the approx length and width of that piece of vinyl.  Thinking of ordering some from SMS since their Ivy gold matches better than anything out there currently.

I can measure what I have ordered from VA mustang, but it might not be until tomorrow. I'll post it then.

........ Any pictures of a factory correct installation would be greatly appreciated!!!! :)

A few that might provide some answers - interesting that at one plant at least - for a period the bottom edge was screwed to the car on fastbacks (last picture)
