Underside color of a 1966 (Oct 65) San Jose built mustang
« on: March 01, 2014, 10:58:25 PM »
I'm a new guy to this sight and you all know your stuff, so I need a little help. I own a unrestored  1966 Fastback San Jose built k code. The door tag indicates build day of 02 Oct 65.The underside of my car appears to be green/grayish... correct???   Any thoughts?? Thanks

First welcome to the site - hope you find the information and help here useful in your efforts

We have a allot of batch color cars built at San Jose during a specific period during 65 production but your reporting that this is a 66 San Jose built car.

Would the VIN start with 117 ?

We know the projected build dates on the door tag are often off so looking to focus the discussion as close as possible to other examples built at San Jose

Again - welcome

Welcome to the site.
I have a San Jose "K" code Fastback with a scheduled build date of 18 Oct 65 and a San Jose "A" code hardtop with a scheduled build date of 15 Oct 65 and both have dark grey undercarriage. Coincidence? Jeff, add this info to your data base.

First 3 of the vin 114 what do ya think???

Your car appears to "fit" into a pretty short period in 66 production at San Jose where they applied a batch colored epoxy primer (likely mix of primer and exterior colors in improve its sealing qualities and save $$$'s) Would expect that the firewall forward would still be red oxide from the other application.

Looks like (from other examples) its usage was gone by the end of the month. So maybe a three week period at San Jose that year - that period before they returned to the more common muddy red oxide color

I have a San Jose "K" code Fastback with a scheduled build date of 18 Oct 65 and a San Jose "A" code hardtop with a scheduled build date of 15 Oct 65 and both have dark grey undercarriage. .......

So?
Oct 15th = 1195xx
Oct 18th = 1204xx

Since I track everything by VIN's ;)

Jeff, add this info to your data base.

This discussion let me add a bunch more and both of yours to that page in the spreadsheets :)

Interesting.  My 9/28/65 scheduled build VIN 112xxx SJ car is definitely red oxide underneath (pinkish/salmonish "red").

So?
Oct 15th = 1195xx
Oct 18th = 1204xx
Since I track everything by VIN's ;)
Oct 15th = 1203xx (aka 6R07A--)
Oct 18th = 1218xx (aka 6R09K--)

Yes have cars prior to this approx three week period, with the pale red oxide on file

Same here as Rockhouse66.    10/14/65 SJ with a 119 vin with red oxide underside.  6R09A

Since we kind of accept that the projected build dates can be off by possibly three weeks your car could easily have a projected date inside this batch  colored floor but actually been built just prior or after putting it in the red oxide period

That's what makes this all so fun ;)

Thanks all for the additional data points. Just thought I would mention that I don't always post full vin's since the examples I'm posting are not my cars but belong to others. Don't want someone goggling/yahooing their VIN and getting upset about details being made public. ;)

I only wish!! I'm a guy from northern Wisconsin who just happened to  stumble across a K code Fastback for sale at a local gas station. No secrets here, just trying to educate myself.
