Original Dual Redline Tires
« on: February 18, 2014, 11:44:32 AM »
So I have searched through the forum and could not find a reference to the correct, original tread pattern of the US Royal Dual Redline Tires. I know that the current reproductions are incorrect, but what is the correct tread pattern of the original dual redlines that would have come on a K code car (for reference Metuchen, Mar. 1965 Build Date)? I have seen a few different tread patterns and casting numbers. Also, how do you decode the casting numbers such as ZK7760 or XK7515?

Here are a couple of photos I found online; both are of the same tire.

I have an original tire from my car but not sure how to post a decent picture.  May not be correct for you since it is from my June 65 Dearborn with Styled Steel Wheels.

After 4K miles I replaced my original tires with Michelins.   The redline tires were scarey bad, particularly in wet conditions.

The numbers you are asking about are either serial numbers or batch/lot numbers, mine is MK7526. I would think that in either case the higher the letters/numbers the later in production.
There are difference between the originals, mine shown below, and the Coker reproductions. Note the smooth transition from the sidewall to the tread, reproductions have ribs. Also there are differences in the position and width of the red lines. The model type is different, this one is a "Super Safety 800 - XP".

Pic 2: Model type
pic 3: The opposite side where the serial number is located. Note the original Style Steel Wheel rivets.

All great information, but is there a consensus on which "type" or "model" of US Royal Dual Redline would be most appropriate? I guess I have seen different "types" or "models" that have had different physical tread patterns.

The one I posted pictures of is the original spare tire on my San Jose, Oct 65 build, "K" GT Fastback. The Coker rib type are not correct. There may be other tires that are a different road rating.

There are some big differences between the US Royal repro and originals.

Let me clarify my questions a bit. I get that the repro tire is a far cry from what the originals were.

Questions: What model US Royal Dual Redline tire does the consensus feel would have been correct from the factory? Is it the Super Safety 800-XP that Jim posted pictures of? Is it another model US Royal Tire? Were different model US Royal tires used at different assembly plants or would they have all been the same for the use of the dual redlines?

The only 65-66 original red line tires I have ever seen were the Super Safety - 800XP like the pics Jim posted.  There are 2 versions with the only difference I could tell is one has the interstate-looking logo and one does not.

There was a BF-Goodrich red line, but it was produced in the late 70's/early 80's in New Zealand.

and trying to locate a good useable original or even NOS correct dual red line tires are tough and expensive. Just ask Charles he has some first hand experience with that matter.  hence why the vast majority of people like myself who want dual red lines will have to go the repo option.

its a shame but reality

Okay. So here is what peaked my interest initially in terms of the tread patterns. Both of these tires are stated as original Super Safety 800-XP tires. But if you look closely, the tread patterns are different. I guess these are the 2 different versions that Charles was referring to above? But there is a noticeable different in the tread pattern and these both have the "Interstate" logo.  So which tread is correct?

One photo is from Perkins Collection and is for sale on eBay. The other is also on eBay.

I don't see a tread pattern difference, the one in the top pic just looks used and the bottom one not used.

Charles. Both tires are stated as having essentially the same tread depth remaining (8/32")
