Correct Battery application
« on: February 03, 2014, 12:14:16 PM »
I am trying to determine if my application requires a group 24 or Group 27 battery.  The battery tray was long ago replaced so I am not sure if that would have been any indicator.  In review of the AMA specs for my application it appears my January 72, Dearborn build, 351 2V Mach 1 with heated back glass and no AC was equipped with a 61 Amp alternator and the group 27 battery.  I am not sure though.  The Build Sheet for 72 indicates codes "AB" under battery and "61" under Alternator Code.  Marti Report does not indicate an optional upcharge for a group 27, but it may have been part of the $42 heated backlight option.

Advice on proper battery and alternator application would be appreciated.

Think the battery code from your buildsheet might be the most telling detail in helping discover what battery your car originally came with.

Looking at other buildsheets I found the following (used 71-73 for a bigger sampling)

(71) F code with ac nothing else --------------- AA for battery  5A for alt
(72) F code with ac nothing else --------------- AA for battery  5A for alt
(71) M code with no ac  --------------- AB for battery 4G for alt
(72) Q code with no ac  --------------- AB for battery  51 for alt
(73) H code with  ac  --------------- AB for battery   5A for alt
(71) J code with  ac  --------------- AF for battery  51 for alt
(71) R code with no  ac  --------------- AF for battery  51 for alt

Looking at this seems to indicate that an AB battery would be a group 24 not the later grp 27

Hope this helps

Jeff,

Thank you for the comparison documentation.  I also emailed Bob Perkins and he has confirmed that the 61 amp alternator is correct for the Mach 1 Heated Back Glass as he has had examples in his collection.  He has also indicated that the Group 27 battery would be correct for this application.  Again Thank you for the feedback.

All I had to offer and go by. Interesting that just that one option bumped up the battery and alternator .

Glad you got some solid info for your car
