Mystery Transmission Tunnel Wiring

I just pulled out the carpet on my Dec 64 Dearborn K Conv. I am seeing two sets of wires, one is clearly the neutral safety switch, could the other be for a console? The car in it's current state had air con and no console. The car should not have had air, I guess it could have had console.

Thoughts?

The cable harness that goes thru the tunnel is your back-up light switch harness, you don't have a neutral safety switch on a "K" car in 1964 as all transmissions were top loaders, not automatics. The other may have been for an early type console feed, can't see the wire/tracer color (black/blue?).

Well I'm pretty confused here because a) there would not be a "neutral safety switch" on a 4-speed car and b) there would not be backup lights on a Dec. '64 car.

The "Arvinode" car was a Dec 64 and it has backup lights.  Not sure if they were standard by that time or an option tho.

If your car had backup lights then as Jim points out part of that wiring should go to a backup light switch on your shifter base.

The two unused wires appear to be for a console courtesy light, as I see blue/black colors on one and the other wire is obviously the ground (ring connector).

I guess I should not assumed it was neutral safety. There are wires at the base of the shifter, back up? Then the other may be console. The previous owner made a GT with air. Possibly removing the BU lights in place of GT valance and console removed for aircon unit?

That depression / flat spot behind the shifter where the wires go through is where they drill for the backup light wires.  Should be a conical rubber grommet they go through, and looks like it's there.  They should go to the shifter "base" below the tunnel where it mounts on the transmission.  There you should find a switch that looks like below.  That's your backup light switch.  Even if it's not there that flat spot is where the 65 wiring manual shows those go through, and think I remember reading that somewhere too.  So yes, guessing the P.O. switched out the rear valance.

Just fyi, my Oct 64 SJ Fastback is a 4 speed car without backup lights, and that flat spot is not drilled out & no wiring.




Also, the console can still be used with air, it's just shortened and a chrome cap placed over the end to allow for the under dash A/C unit.
