Odd tag on upper cowl
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:24:22 PM »
Has anyone ever seen a tag like this? It is on a 66 NJ coupe 6T07C177122
Any idea what it is for?

Yes.  I have this tag on my NJ coupe as well 6T07T194XXX.  I believe the consensus is that it was some sort of inspection tag for the cowl assembly weld if I'm not mistaken.  There is a thread somewhere on this board discussing it.

on a side note, our cars were built pretty close together it seems. :)

Quote
Fria recounts a conversation he had with Bob Negstad:
" Bob Negstad related to me that they had problems with inadequately trained workers not producing secure spot welds. Supervisors examined the moving chassis and, using a screwdriver, tried to break loose a weld that looked suspect. If the weld failed, then the area was rewelded with what was called a security weld to better secure the joint. Workers didn't like to see their welds fail, said Negstad, because the worker knew he wasn't doing his job properly and the supervisor was taking notes."

The tabs might have identified the inspector that was looking at these welds. Or it might have identified the workers that actually did the welding. If a weld failed on the S6 side of the chassis, they could go right back to that worker and let him know - short and sweet.

Have seen them many times. Haven't found anyone that explained their purpose or usage.

The punch designs are similar to punch-outs on buck tags... could be a correlation between them.

Steve,

I've got the same tags on my March 65 Dearborn convertible.  However, the right one is stamped P4 and the left one is stamped S6.  Apparently they have a purpose, but Dearborn used numbers and letters while Metuchen used symbols.  I've racked my brain, knowing the options and equipment that my car was originally outfitted with, to find a meaning for them, but I haven't had any luck yet translating what their meaning might be.

3 of my 66 NJ (January, March, April) cars have evidence of this metal tag as well. they are all different lengths, two have no punch-outs and the other one does. most restorations removed any sign of this tag, in due course all mine will be photo-graphed and returned when the restorations are done, till then its another little item we will learn more about over the years. good topic.

It's not uncommon to see these tags ripped off on original cars too.  If you know where to look, can usually see remnants or the 'edge' of the tag.

Best pic I can find of this tag on my car before it was, sadly, removed when cowl repairs were done during a restoration in  the '90s.....

I ran across this old topic and thought I'd revive it with some addl. info. Pics are of similar cowl tabs I found on a May 65 Dearborn FB I'm working on.I'd never seen these before and queried Mr. Turner,Mr. Barkley and Mr. Porter to try to solve the mystery. They had seen them before and led me to the old posting here.I can't really make out the shape of the punchouts but they do remind me of the punches on buck tags. My apologies on the pics. I wasn't sure how to post them but gave it a try anyway.
