65/66 disc brake steel wheel
« on: January 25, 2014, 03:05:34 PM »
Is there a "special" 14" stamped steel wheel on 65/66 disc brake cars
used with wheel covers that is different from drum brake wheels?
If so does anyone have a picture?

Yes, that is true.  When I had my 65 GT Coupe back in 1968, I had a flat tire up front.  I put the spare on, but the car wouldn't move.  Turns out someone replaced the spare with a standard drum wheel.

I have no pictures for you; just an anecdote.

Do you know if the spare you tryed to put on was a 65/66 wheel?

I have never seen one of these special wheels, just heard discussions
where some say there is a special wheel and some say there is not one.

There is a special wheel for D/B equipped cars. This has been discussed before sometime ago. Some folks didn't believe it.

I've never heard of the 'special wheels' or seen a picture of one but would like to hear more about the mystery wheel.

Would a 67 disc brake car w/ steel wheels have the same situation?

I can't answer your wheel question about 1967 Mustangs but I have encountered the wheel issue with 1965/66 D/B cars.

I've run into this issue, but assumed the wheel was just not compatible, like off a different model or year car.

Seem to remember discussing in the past, don't recall if the MPC called out a different wheel?

The '75 version of the MPC does not show a disk brake wheel for 65 or 66. But it does show a 15" wheel available for both 65 and 66, something I did not think was an option for the Mustang.  While something that is over 6,000 pages is difficult to pull off without error, this is probably one more example of how errors can creep in over time, and why the earliest applicable MPC is generally the best.

Does anyone have the original 65 version of the MPC, should be listed in there,
mine is the '75 version, last printing.

Maybe if you ordered disc brakes without styled steel wheels you had to get
the 15" wheel option?

Having been bit too many times in the past by relying on Ford documentation, I would have to hesitate to say the issue is settled, but at least it appears from the documentation that there was no disc brake wheel for 65-66.

As I mentioned previously, this could be a matter of wheels having been swapped in the past that might have been from a different year or model.

Should be reasonably easy to test this out... someone with known wheels from a drum brake car can try to fit them on a factory disc brake car.

I should have mentioned that the disk brake wheels will fit just fine on the drums, but not vice versa.  I suspect the MPC may have eliminated the drum version as the disk brake wheel (14") will work fine in all situations that call for a 14" wheel.  Can't explain the 65 and 66 MPC's, though.

Good point, you can never say never.
I worked in a Ford parts dept and would see the that the
before and after dates in the book didn't always apply.

That would be an interesting test.  The key would be 'known' wheels.  ;)
