Yes, that is true. When I had my 65 GT Coupe back in 1968, I had a flat tire up front. I put the spare on, but the car wouldn't move. Turns out someone replaced the spare with a standard drum wheel. I have no pictures for you; just an anecdote.
Do you know if the spare you tryed to put on was a 65/66 wheel?I have never seen one of these special wheels, just heard discussionswhere some say there is a special wheel and some say there is not one.

Having been bit too many times in the past by relying on Ford documentation, I would have to hesitate to say the issue is settled, but at least it appears from the documentation that there was no disc brake wheel for 65-66.
Should be reasonably easy to test this out... someone with known wheels from a drum brake car can try to fit them on a factory disc brake car.
