1965 289 engine black paint

Hello!  First post in this site...

I have a 65 fastback 289 4v that i started restoring 20 years ago, then got married had kids, and it sat and sat.  Now finally gonna finish it.

I had to send out the carb to be rebuilt, and while off i am going to repaint the intake. I have to use rattle cans.  Originally used krylon 1613, but now that its gone, what should i use.  I have heard SEMS trim black, but i am not sure....

Any suggestions on spray can black for the block?  I used eastwood chassis black on the engine comparment walls...

Grainger has 1613 just bought some a few weeks ago.

Never used these guys but they seem to have it also:

IMHO both of those is too flat to reproduce the original color and sheen of an engine black. Both are much closer to engine compartment (chassis) black

Gloss black is typically used. With that said the engine sheen was less then gloss black.  The gloss black engine paints typically dull down after a few heat cycles thankfully. Eastwood sells engine paints as well as your local auto parts store. The only thing complicated about this issue is which engine  spray paint brand to choose . All of the spray can type are very similar IMO.

If you have to go with a spray can, Duplicolor semi-gloss black engine paint is reasonable.  Probably would need to lay down a wet coat as it will dry in after some heat cycles like Bob mentioned.  Be sure to use a quality primer, like a catalyzed epoxy.  Otherwise you'll probably be seeing rust spots and blistering/peeling after a while.

 I have included two pics from my engine rebuild a few years back. I used the Duplicolor gloss engine black. It came out quite glossy at first but over time it dulled down to an acceptible sheen. I am very happy with it so far. Definitely smart to use a good primer underneath like Caspian says, (I had some paint flake off the gas line bracket when installing the hold down!). I hear they sell some good 2K primers in rattle cans now but I haven't used them first hand. In the one side view you can see that I chose a satin finish for the generator cover. The air cleaner snorkel and heat tube also recieved the Duplicolor black, while the road draft tube is NOS. My engine is not 100% concourse but I am very satisfied with the results.

Yes, Old Krylon 1613 is good for a lot of things in the engine compartment, but certainly not the engine Block on a '65.  It is simply not glossy enough as mentioned above.

Remember/consider that a article is only the collection of thoughts, and beliefs of the author. May be great or less than greata but often we discover new information or discoveries after publication. Been there - done that :( 

Its unfortunate that many used the older articles as references and the final word rather than checking to see if there is any updates IMHO

In some areas, that may be true. But not all. I can show you a lot of articles from Mustang Monthly from the 90's that Bob Perkins wrote that I'm sure many have used (including myself) because the paint was basic/standard no matter what plant. And also Ed Meyer. 

I'm sure the articles wasn't a "collection of thoughts and beliefs" of these gentlemen.

As long as it's semi-gloss black and is not super-glossy, a favorite of the "Bow Tie" people.

Guess our opinions aren't the same :) but that's ok.

Think in their most basic form that is what every article is. Doesn't meant that there isn't great and important information shared but often we discover new or different info as time passes. Its just the nature of the hobby and business. But is not easy discussing such esoteric reflections in the written word on forums so I'll leave it at that


In any case back to the subject at hand  ;D
